Yeah, thinking back on Banjo it's almost a puzzle adventure game in many respects. Vertical action is kept to a minimum save for flying and maybe one or two large areas in each level (the haunted mansion, the rock structure in the beach level, the giant showman). Beyond that your ass is pretty much always on the ground running around, looking for minigames or pads/shoes to get the one specific puzzle piece. I think that's why Tooie pissed me off so much, the levels are twice as big but you're still stuck running everywhere and every puzzle piece is essentially which power do I need to unlock it, unlike 64 where you know you have the tools to get to the star it's just a matter of actually getting there.

Honestly not excited for this one at all. Levels look sparse and creatively bankrupt. Ill probably get it regardless of we are being honest as Mario has a great track record, however I thought the same about Zelda and sold that shortly after.

Although on the upside, ARMS should be cheap enough to grab by then.

You know, i have tried on multiple occasions to get into Mario. Played a lot of the games (admittedly not all the way through as i lose interest) and i just can't see the appeal of Mario games? To me just seems like a boring game.
I have finished only one game and that is Super Mario Sunshine, and that would have been fun to play as an original title and characters. I loved the game, was great fun but i remember it not as Mario but as the game where you are cleaning up muck and traversing the world in fun ways

So, all in all, am i just missing the point of Mario? What indications are there so far that Odyssey will be genuinely fun, in the sense that the game doesn't need Mario plastered in it for it to be fun. Like how i felt with Sunshine

I played 64DS and Sunshine as a kid. 64 had a fantastic sense of adventure; I liked Sunshine at the time but in reality it has some very questionable design.

As an adult I've tried to play Galaxy and 3D world, and they were fun at first but lost my interest fairly early on. Same goes for the 2D games... I beat SMB1 since it's short, but I've only ever played a couple levels of SMW.

Anyone here who didn't play any Mario games as a child, but then extensively played and enjoyed them as an adult? I feel like there won't be very many.

Depends on how how old you count an adult. I didn't get to really play (see: the entire games instead of at a retro arcade) SMB1, 3, or world until I was about 13-15, but I fell in love with them. I can still jump in and play them ten years later.

SM64 is still superior. Galaxy and Galaxy 2 didn't hold my interest that well, either. I'm hoping Odyssey will make me really enjoy it instead of slogging through for completions sake.
