Don't get me wrong. The game is solid as fuck conceptually, it just overly suffers from the devs lazily refusing to optimize anything until "it's done."

Too bad it will be so bloated with shit by that point that putting any meaningful optimizations in at all will be next to impossible.

There's plenty of way to kill beasties in the game already.

that's not lazy, that's how it's done.
you do not optimize your software when you still in the progress of adding features. optimizing while still developing is like opening a new can of worms with each change you make. it's not efficient. they kinda did that with natural selection2 as well, which ran until the end of its developing cycle like ass, and when it was done it was buttery smooth

At some points of the map, the game is trying to load 3 or 4 biomes at once. My 5820k and gtx960 run just fine, except around the middle (middle southwest-ish), when I'm around the grassy plateaus, kelp forest, safezone, and jelly shroom cave.

>>383230086
The game is an exploration type game. Not a CoD-like shooter. Giving the player highly destructive tools takes away from that experience.

I've only been to reddit once. Because, in 2007, /v/ started telling me to go back there. I don't see the big deal. Bunch of old, rehashed 4chan memes gone full retard. Same thing happened when I was told to go back to 9gag a few years later.

you don't, no one does that with such a small team because, in the end, you spend more time on optimizing, and waiting for that optimization to be implemented to see what next get broken by it, than finishing the game. you get one performance hog ironed out, the next addition to the engine and the game just adds just adds 10 other issues, including a similar problem you just fixed before again, while everyone's work was on halt waiting for that optimization to get in place to see if their addition still works as expected. you finish your software, run the debug modes while analyzing performance and bottlenecks on each element, and fix these issues, this takes time, but less than not doing it in one go. UWE basically lets you play their internal builds as part of their early access. they have no obligations to meet your expectations, stop being so entitled, they clearly state this is a game in development and unfinished, they let you participate in their developing process and progress, something other companies would not even let you see. heck, they did it back then with natural selection 2 when early access wasn't even a thing yet. that first alpha build ran at 10 -20 fps and had not even gameplay since it was just the bare proof of concept engine with a test map and nonfunctioning weapons. you downloaded their internal builds from their server after chipping in 15$, and with each build the game took shape, we did not see any real framerate gains until the game went gold, optimizing the engine code and assets took less than 2 months from that point on we had 50fps on toasters.

>>
>>383238224
I get what you're saying, but you don't necessarily need to optimize/ everything/ as you build it. You can try to keep things clean and iron out major performance hogs (and simple minor ones) as you go. Then, when it's time, you do a full pass.
>>
>>383238350
then why would you need defenses then.
you only need defenses when you actually feel threatened.
subnautica makes you feel threatened, even though there is no imminent danger. you mostly pucker over nothing

How DON'T you kill the reapers? Fling exploding fish or poisonous mushrooms at them with the gravity gun, shoot torpedos, use the fuck off electric field a couple times, drill them into fish meal, or just freeze and knife them.

With a grapple arm and a drill arm on the prawn, you can spiderman all around the map and drill right through any creature you encounter. It's fun but a little easy.

It's weird how there's no dolphin-like creatures in the game. It's highly likely that that kind of creature would evolve and be successful on most planets with life. Same with sharks. Mudshark doesn't really count.

They've got to figure out a way to deal with floating point errors if they want to make the map bigger. Swim just a few km out into the void and your character/vehicle/etc starts glitching out due to the rounding errors.

They're either have to get access to Unity's source code, implement load-points somehow, or try some workaround like the floating-origin method that KSP uses.
>>
>>383239115
Well that's what I'm saying, it's not even really a "scary" game, people just naturally get scared from stuff related to the sea.

Also a lot of the "hate" is clearly just people that have come to shitpost about "muh guns sjw agenda tumblr cartoony designs" from shit they heard on places like /pol/ and they clearly aren't even familiar with what's actually in the game to legitimately hate it.
>>

reapers dont bother me. you can easily outmaneuver them and get everywhere you want to go. i cant even remember the last time a reaper grabbed me. heck, my aurora salvage base camp is right at the cliff where the auroras nose hangs above a void, with a reaper circling it. i regularly hopped out just with a seaglide to plant my weeds, and grab some titanium, or briefly swim over to the wreck to get the next door unlocked. reapers are just big noisy doofs. sometimes his facetacles pop out of my moonpool while its trying to get to my seamoth. i installed panorama windows in my moon pool to check what he is doing before i launch the moth

Wrong.
As a software (and former game developer), I believe you do not grasp the meaning of technical debt.
>>
>>383239295
that's why i prefer to play hardcore survival. the stakes are so high, you realize after a while that the greatest threat to your life is your own human misjudgment of situations, every cave dive, every wreck exploration gets more threatening than any creature in the game. and now add said creatures, the game gets a million times more spoopy and unpredictable because you do not take your own actions into account at first. you sometimes prepare for half an hour, having this schedule in your head how to spend your oxygen, where and when the point of no return is, which tools you need. and then you spend longer on cutting open that bulkhead deep inside that wreck than expected, and your butthole begins to chew on your chair again, knowing that this time you won't make it if you do not abort RIGHT NOW.. NO NOT ANY SECOND LONGER, i better get some air piping down here. the entire game turns into some ptsd shit when you enable permadeath.

they could not hear her telepathy since they were no longer biological beings. they were so technologically advanced and evolved, their bodies were more like constructs holding their incorporeal being, thats why you only find their "soul storages" in the precursor caches when their final evolutionary step was being converted to pure data, powered by ion crystals

Also if you don't want the big spooky fish to attack you then head to the mini-islands connected to Aurora's back (near engine) and swim towards the front until you find a hole and a ramp inside

And as I said you can just fuck around and not even follow the story, being infected is part of the story though but doesn't really mean anything practical, you'll know what it means when the Sunbeam arrives and you are at the designated location

>after 1 year the 3-legged moonpool still isn't fixed
>>
I don't understand the prawn research progress. I stumbled upon some pieces in the ocean and scanned them, got a counter something like X/20, then I found my way into Aurora and there was a big room with partly damaged prawns, I started scanning them and counter changed to X/4. After scanning three of them I though I'm close to finishing it, but upon scanning fourth it suddenly changed to 1/4. Is it some sort of multi-layered research like Cyclops? But with Cyclops each part had its own separate counter. I have a suspicion I caught a really nasty bug.
>>
>>383248143
Speaking of moonpools, where the fuck are the fragments now?
>>

It's more because they're lazy and don't want to develop combat engine.

Judging by your screenshot it's only supposed to have two, the two over the cliff ones have nowhere to go. But Moonpool legs are really screwy, I've got one that just floats with all four legs that have no intention of touching the ground despite being really close to it.

>>383248163
You sure you didn't scan arms instead? The main PRAWN has four bits, all can be found in the Aurora bay but there's also Torpedo/Drill/Grappling Arms which count as seperate.

I always have good luck with Moonpools at either the large wreck 400m down in the Grand Reef that's stuck against a cliff or the one in the Blood Kelp Zone that is stuck in a similar way. Both are always a good source of Moonpool fragments for me.

Can I change game's language? It installed in my local language, which makes it uncomfortable when discussing the game here and in game properties in steam library there's no language tab.

>>383248620
It could be a bug. In the Aurora bay there should be four to be scanned, three pretty intact and one really busted behind some fire. There's also PRAWN fragments to be scanned in wrecks though although they are mostly in more dangerous places like the Dunes.

>>
>>383248556
Vehicle Modification station will let you craft stuff for the seamoth/prawn suit, most everything should be unlocked except for I believe different prawn arms. The Modification station is used for your gear AND upgrading the max depth mods for both seamoth and prawn.

Also they really need to do an optimization patch, the game is fine for a while but starts to really chug once I progress to around the research facility. Shouldn't have to stop to let the game level out every hundred meters.

You can get the 300m depth module in the aurora. You can build modules for the seamoth with the vehicle modification station (that requires the moonpool). But to upgrade the depth module you need the modification station, which doesn't require the pool.

The problem with no dedicated weapons in Subnautica isn't that the fabricator doesn't have any blueprints for them, but that it specifically takes advantage of the fact that it is a game and doesn't provide you with any other way of manufacturing items other than with the fabricator. It prevents the usual human ingenuity from coming into the picture.

If I were left alone to my own devices I would try using the laser cutter and any one of the random ship parts floating around to create crude bladed weapons as soon as I had the ability to do so. Even intentionally dismantling newly fabricated base components or vehicles would also work if the wreckage metal had become too soft for actual hard use. Then one day I would craft a big enough scrap blade and weld it to a PRAWN arm and go Reaper hunting with it. But I can't do any of these because the game doesn't include these kinds of natural human things.

The planet itself is an ocean planet with it's own ecology and the Pecursors weren't native. Their bases set up there were originally just study of the planet and it's life and turned into research into the disease killing them once they found the Sea Emperor was immune to it. One of the facilities got buggered by a Sea Dragon wanting to retrieve it's stolen eggs and the disease spread across the planet and placed under quarantine.
>>
>>383254828
Okay but what does the infection do? Still not clear
>>
Should I go to the Aurora with my seaglide or work towards a seamoth first?
>>
>>383253916
the precursors have chosen this planet to research a virus that was in the process of killing their world. they found out that one species on that planet, the sea emperor was entirely immune to it, and captured the sole specimen and it eggs. but they had a major containment breach when a sea dragon Leviathan rammed the disease research facility, where they held its a seadragon egg they experimented with, releasing the virus.
now, 1000 years later that planet is entirely dead, only that little patch of quarantine zone is left, kept alive by the sea emperors virus healing enzymes, spread by those peppers going in and out of the primary containment via the tube systems. only those few biomes the emperor had as territory survived since the peppers kept returning to these places, spreading the enzymes they picked up from the containment facility. when you scan the pipe system it tells you that sick peepers with plant seeds in their bellies enter the containment through pipes, and leave the containment through the other pipes again with empty bellies, and dosed with the enzyme. your goal is to adapt this enzyme to work on your physiology
>>
>>383254967
On the player? Nothing, it's there to drive you forward as a vehicle for the story. From a in-game story standpoint I don't think they went into details beyond "kills shit". Could extrapolate based on what little we see in that it causes bulging yellow boils on infected people/creatures and seems to kill pretty damned fast but I don't know if that much thought went into the disease itself by the devs.

>>383255202
If you know a good route to take you can go either way and avoid any Reaper shenanigans but it's just as easy to take a Seaglide/swim and not lose your little putput to a Reaper.

I really want to want to try this game but too many games to play and not enough time.
>>

Don't you find that in the same place you get the suit itself? Even if you don't, that felt like it was a pretty common part. There's a really huge wreck that's fairly close to the lifepod that has a bunch in it too.

Is this guy friendly? How do I trigger this part of the story?

Why is your sub floating above the water?
Why is the specular map for the water using checkers?
>>
>>383262086
It is. After you've gone to the Mountains Islands and entered the Precursor gun facility you'll find information on the next place to go to. Keep following the hints and you eventually find your way down in the deepest parts and the Sea Emperor and it's story content.

I have like 70 hours in this game but it still finds new ways to spook the pants off me
>>
Been playing this for three nights straight since I got a newborn.

The game is amazing. Transferred my base to my cyclops I build yesterday. Going to make my prawn suit today. Feels very comfy exploring everything.

And I am killing things with the stasis gun.

That's more kekworthy than spooky. I once had once spin continuously for no apparent reason in the Shallows. It flung my escape pod some ways away.
>>

That was my very first experience with Reefbacks when I bought the game, it was just spinning slightly above water
I was so terrified I almost dropped the game

But none of your sentences were properly capitalized, and all of them were nothing but run-on bullshit.

It's time to go back to Freshman English, anon.

Yeah they do sound and look terrifying at first, to the point where you don't want to go anywhere near them. Then you learn that they're actually retarded. Big retarded floating reefs.
>>
>>383228541
I just started playing. Is there any way to kill this thing or trap it permanently? I cant explore with that thing down there. Too scary.

That's the kind of shit they don't want you doing. Hence no weapons

There's several areas that have multiple. It's only the fifth largest creature in the game.
