Why does SEGA do stuff like paint a train with Sonic characters or open a temporary Sonic cafe if Sonic games don't do well in Japan? His anime was even cancelled early in Japan but continued on in the rest of the world. Just how unpopular is this game series over there? Is he even know to even exist to the average gamer over there?

Is it all because the Megadrive (Genesis) didn't do good in japan? Because not even the classic Sonic games sold well.

Sega is still the mascot. Nobody likes his games but they still see him as the face of the company.
Same deal with Pac Man. I didn't even know the Pac Man World games were made by westerners until I wiki'd it on a hunch.

How about the time Sonic was in an anime?

Don't know about the cafe but I can tell you the train thing is nothing special. Companies do that all the time, at least here in the states.

They didn't play pac-man in Japan?

So he is just a Mascot to them? Is it a well known mascot? I get the feeling that Sonic is basically unknown in Japan outside of a Sega Joypolis.

Sonic is recognizable to people who don't play video games.

In Japan, SEGA is better known for their arcade repertoire. As it should be, really.

If you don't think Pac-Man Championship Edition DX+ is the hypest shit then get out of my face.

He was also the MC's phone wallpaper if I'm not mistaken. I remember being pretty surprised.

There isn't a whole lot of online sonic fan activity from Japan from what I have seen.

Painting trains in Japan is actually a pretty common marketing technique
