Why do people say this isn't a "real" fighting

Nobody says that, it's just that some people don't like it.

Personally i don't like the way the combo system works, and I think Neatherrealm's art direction is fugly.

not OP but i've definitely seen people claim NRS games aren't actually fighting games.

As far as I can tell, to some people, if it's not a weeb anime fighter or made by capcom, it's not a fighting game.

I've heard that skullgirls is the only good western fighting game, but no one ever bothered to answear me why.
Personally I don't find MK all that interesting, but I wouldn't go far as to say it isn't a "real fighting game".

They dont say that it isnt a fighting game, thats reserved to smash, they say that it isnt a good competitive fighting game, which dependant of how you see it, its kinda true, i always talk shit about NRS games and i dont like many mechanics and systems but to be honest its mostly the artistic side that i cant stand (art direction, animations, music or lack of it, sounds and voices and UI) i never really played any nrs game but i would say they have some hype moments and every entry seems to be better than the last
