Ray tracing is in the name, it traces the ray of light exactly where it will bounce around the scene accurately using math. All caustics as well.
Rasterised just guesses or uses other tricks, pre-lit textures and other shit, cheap GI.
Intel tried it on a version of quake wars years ago, and it flopped due to the horrible frame rate.

That's why we can't do it with current technology. Our poly counts/textures and animations are ALL better than in TS 1 AND 2. But we still can't do raytracing lighting in real time at a high fps.
