In precisely 4 hours and 20 minutes, Grimoire, the herald of pure RPG excellence, releases. IT TOOK 23 LITERAL YEARS TO MAKE (HOLY SHIT), so you know it's gonna be great! The developer is one of the last Neanderthals alive and he possesses the intelligence of five average Homo Sapiens combined. And it can be all yours for the low, low price of 40 AMERICAN DOLLARS. Pic related, just look at this beauty. Let us discuss this incoming masterpiece.
>>
There's no market in pandering to morons. I wouldn't want to make that kind of money.

Grimoire is an elite game that is unlike anything else up on the Steam store. I defy you to find anything like it in the thousands of games listed. I defy you to find a game like it on the planet. It's not even a Wizardry clone really - it's everything Wizardry should have been but never was.

I'm not competing with Sir-Tech any more. Amongst other reasons, they went bankrupt 17 years ago.

I'm not competing with anybody. Grimoire is the pinnacle of the peak of the summit of the incline. I could probably get 99.95 from a lot of people but I don't want to limit it just to the very elect of RPG players. I made a compromise and and priced it somewhere just under current AAA titles. The truth is there is not an AAA title you could buy nowadays that deserves to crawl up on a high chair and plant a kiss in the crack of Grimoire's ass when it comes to enjoyment, immersion and wonderful escape.

I say all this with confidence because I have been playing my game 12 hours a day for two months and I can assure you there has never been anything like it in all of recorded human history. It's the greatest thing ever to emerge from that genre. The fact is, people who enjoy that genre are considering it cheap at that price. If you are not a connoisseur of the genre then why would I amend anything in it to appeal to you? It's like saying Mozart needed more cowbell.

Trust what I am saying. Those of you who played the demo and got the scent of greatness will know the full game has achieved it. For whatever it lacks it has much more in abundance.

I was just playing Kublai Cathedral to check all the logic and was almost weeping tears of joy at how wonderfully told the story of everything is in the game. I had forgotten a lot of it and it was like reading the work of someone else.
>>
The game will suck you mentally into another dimension of win and excellence, no kidding. I warn unstable people against playing it at all. If it becomes that kind of obsession with the author - who should be long tired of it by now - you can imagine what elite fans RPGs will feel.

The game is special. I have supercharged it with awesomeness right down to the atomic level of every bit in the digital binary. $39.95 is very cheap once you have played the game for a short while.
>>
Grimoire is a quality game for distinguished monocle wearing top hat and tuxedo connoisseurs of roleplaying games. This is not another whackamole begware lowest common denominator sewer skimming bottom feeding title. I would recommend that regular Steam consumers have a doctor standing by before playing Grimoire as the shock to the system could lead to a trip to the emergency room. It's not like anything they are used to seeing up here. This is the true old skool goodness. You may think you are prepared but rest assured you probably have not seen this much awesomeness anywhere in the past 20 years.
>>
>>383161943
Got an archive of these or the codex thread? He's a fucking comedian.
>>
I have last veto on any price anywhere as the author.

This game will never, ever be offered anywhere for $12.95 before the year 2025. That's a promise.

I am considering an opening discount. It is highly recommended by Steam. After that, it will go to full price and stay there for the next 8 years.

I am following the development of SHELTERED and they are doing a good job adding new detail every few months. It's a very good investment.

Anybody doesn't like it is invited to spend 20 years of their own time writing a game superior to all previous Wizardry releases. Good luck, it's easy to say but hard to do. Working alone, it's impossible unless you are a Neanderthal.

Corwin doesn't know what he is missing, seriously. The game is x infinity better than the version he tested.

Listen to what I was double-checking today. You're not going to believe it.

So I freed Q'Orl from the Royal Bestiary and he left to go to the Astral Plain. I also fought the cockatrice here and got the braid.

After sawing off the lock at [REDACTED] I noticed it was pretty solid gold so I spoke to one of the thieves in the woods about it. He told me something amazing - that there was a smith in Crowl who could work a piece of raw gold like that into some pretty spectacular armour. I took it back to Smithy and he told me to leave it with him, he'd see what he could do.

I went off and had some amazing adventures in a dungeon to the far west and discovered a Djinn Bottle. I got the Djinn to reveal the secret page for me and later I asked him to transport us to the Astral Plain. We met up with Q'Orl again and he gave us something very special in reward for traveling so far to see him again. We moongated back to Dominion Wilderness outside the city and I spent some time forging a recommendation letter for Shrike to see if we could join up with the Vanguard.

I went back to see Smithy, stopping at another weird cave for some excellent rewards before arriving back in Crowl. I was increasingly getting pretty fitted out, the entire party was wielding some pretty serious weapons and magic.

Smithy had made me the best armor in the game, the golden armor. Pretty pimped out at this point, plus two resurrected party members from bones and one of the Ego entities had joined us and they had gargantua stats. Was getting in shape to beat up some of the toughest monsters in the game. All this happened today just wandering around testing and double-checking various elements of gameplay.

It's so dense it is like those 12000 page novels written out in longhand on legal paper they find in the apartments of adult retards when they die.

It's so dense it is as thick as jungle foliage that you need two machetes to clear a trail through.

There are wheels within wheels in Grimoire and wheels inside of those wheels. Those wheels have little wheels inside them running wheels. Grimoire is a fractal it is so dense.

Sorry, but after two months of playing my own game I have to say that Crusaders Wizardry 7 is just a pale shadow of this win and excellence. I started as an imitator but I am finishing as something else.

It is more beautiful than anything you could imagine. I had no idea. I had not seen it all together at once, having worked on it in fragments commuting for years and years.

Playing it through it is beyond the most awesome game you could possibly imagine. I fear for this generation if they give up on their lives and simply turn to Grimoire for all their needs.

Generally anything good in Wizardry is done by Bradley. If anything grab 6 & 7 from GoG or Steam, and 8 even through Brenda Romero wrote that and lacks Bradley's wit.

Don't bother with Wizardry Gold. the game is broken at the core and instead use the Wizardry 7 DOS version.

Sir-Tech went bankrupt because the market and industry changed to a distrobution system where games had to be blockbusters to cover the publisher costs spent on marketing and other non-game related bullshit. Robert Sirotek, company founder discusses this in the excellent Matt Chat interviews, I highly recommend it.

There's also the fact that Sirotek bros were a bunch of idiots with a lot of really good people working under them. The earliest example of this is when Andrew Greenberg and Robert Woodhead went after Sir-Tech for unpaid royalties for Wizardry and they offered no protection to Bradley that took over. Mismanagements also include Jagged Alliance 2 and it's insanely long development cycle, trying to offload 8 to Australia after fall-out with Bradley and tens other problems. Sirotek's greatest crime though was selling the brand Wizardry to some MMO company in Japan, so we will never see anything western with the name Wizardry ever again.

>>383164857
If you know where to go in Wizardry 7 it becomes a walk in a park where the major problem is grinding and hunting down some of the NPCs to get maps from them. If you don't, figuring out shit will take a while.

120h is basically my estimate cause after 60 hours invested I was halfway - done Ukpyr, Munk city, Orkogre castle, Mountains and all for me to do was honour Yamo, do Rattkins and Dane.

With respect to Sir-tek, they went bankrupt several years before the rise of digital distrobution, and well before Steam was an open platform that was proven successful. I'm sure they would have eventually adopted it if it were even an option, but they're such dinosaur they went extinct before they even had a chance.

Their creative team moved on other companies and projects, Robert & Andrew got their money and got out, too old.

What are you going to do when the game finally releases today? Have you bought enough food and supplies to last over month because you WILL stay inside your room and finish the game in one sitting. The reason why I count JA2 as mismanagement was insanely long development time (mostly due to lack of proper milestones, time constrains etc.), the only reason we got JA2 was that Sir-Tech Canada could find SOME cash to finish it. Sir-Tech Canada also finished Wiz 8 but it was too late to save it.

I have a demo of JA2 from 1997 and the gameplay isn't that different, hell you have some leftovers from that demo in JA2 that got released like flamethrower. Meaning that basically there was no project supervision, again - talented people.

>>383165806

Yeah Brenda. Brenda wrote good manuals but the problem is that her writing in 8 wasn't all that great. Bradley had that mix of pompous writing, philosophy and humour, Brenda had only the pomp and humour, none of that philosophy stuff that Bradley put in. So I felt overall that Dark Savant in Wiz 7 was less Saturday Morning Cartoon villian and more like a looming threat.

Also Brenda in GG was just a proof how much of an attentionwhore she was and still is. She claims to be the most important woman in gaming when half of her life she wrote manuals for Sir-Tech games.

4 was a fucking disaster and it was basically a guy taking a concept of his game and remodelling it to fit Wizardry. They've done that with 5, but 5 worked cause Bradley knew what he was doing.

Because Wizardry 6-8 is focused a LOT on NPC interaction and puzzles with not that much focus on fights and bosses.

If you compare that to contemporaneities of the time: Might and Magic (Heavy focus on combat and dungeon puzzles, Large Open World), Eye of Beholder and Dungeon Master (Small World, Real Time, Lots of dungeon puzzles), Ultima (NPC Interaction, Large Open World).

Overall it felt fresh. Other than that - along with M&M it felt right mixing Sci-Fi and Fantasy elements.

>>383165836

Age in 3-5 was a great way to troll people spamming "Odd Jobs" to get that free 100 gold. I did like the reverse aging quests in 3 and 4, not so much in 5.

>>383166934

I've played the Superdemo. It has a lot of flaws of Wiz 6/7 - slow combat, large areas with random encounters... For a person obsessed with 7 it will be like a second coming. I love 7 but I'm not seeing Grimore more like a nostalgia piece.
>>
>>383163229
I've only played the Wiz 1 remake, and it's pretty neat in a "distilled dungeon-crawler" type of way. It's very difficult and you will need to read up a bit before beginning. Also, you will need to print out the list of spells and what they do, since the names are anything but intuitive (DUMAPIC = light a dark area or reveal your location on the map; the latter function is kinda obsolete with the game's automap convenience).

One thing that can be enraging is how you can randomly lose stats when leveling up. I don't know if save-states can help with that, but it's not uncommon to see your awesome fighter get butt-fucked by several stat losses until he becomes a drooling moron.*

I recommend emulation, since these were originally PC games anyhow.

*or rather, a drooling sape

8 is the best one and also the easiest one to get into. They are all related on story but that's loosely and not that important since there were time lapses if I remember right.
>>
>>383166801
The Jesters, Assassins and Pirates are unrollable, and I didn't multiclass into them in my playthrough of superdemo. And since I don't have any idea as to what they are even supposed to be, skill-wise, I don't want to bet on their abilities in any way. Meaning, as for right now, I pretend that they don't exist, and do not intend to multiclass into them (although I might if the opportunity arises during m actual playthrough). Again, after reading the manual, this can very well change.

I only listed the 8 classes, I currently (before checking the manual) intend to go with.

The major criterion is that for every skill in the game I'm aware of, there must be SOMEONE in my party, who does it well.

This game is claimed to be more polished and enjoyable than wizardry 8 the ai alone is 1000 times more advanced than the one in the demo and the level of interaction with every monster and NPC is staggering.
>>
>>383167119

1-3 had from the get-go origins in being D&D dungeon crawls. Wiz 8 including the "Retro Dungeons" was a nice throwback to that.

Overall I think 1-3 was a very weak trilogy, it did start interest in dungeon crawls in Japan I'll give it that but in Japan 1-3 +5 is more celebrated than 6-7 (8 is largely unknown), which is just sad.

>>383167581

I think that Cleve missed the point, I might be wrong though. I loved Wizardry's wild ride for Journey with Bela and Savant alone. It felt like a journey for revelation, Cleve's writing is a bit too dull.

See that civil defense symbol, now abandoned, to the right of this web site? This is why this stuff was important to our ancestors. Figured it out yet? If you don't prepare for this sort of thing and stay in a defensive position in life, really bad things can happen. One too many days like this and the paper-thin structure of civilization can crumble apart in hours. Don't believe me, though - just keep thinking you know it all because Oprah never mentioned any of this and you will deal with it when it gets here. Chances are, it will be dealing with you.

Start with Dungeon Master or Eye of the Beholder 1/2. Or you could actually start with Legend of Grimrock because that's new and shiny, graphics wise.

Or you could go with Might & Magic 6 like I'm doing now. You need to install the Greyhound's mod which adds mp3 support so you can play the games soundtrack (it was originally coming off from the cdrom) and mouse look support. Try M&M6 first I would say.

>>383171391
Basically in M&M games stats can go as high as 200, so don't be so afraid. The starting stats are important cause otherwise your team is shit at going through.

So yeah Might is for damage, Accuracy for hitting (It is important cause apparently it challenges the AC of the enemy and some enemies have high AC), Speed is how quickly you regain your action after doing an action, also turn order in turn mode (Which is super important), Endurance is in straight relation to HP formula, Personality and Intellect are for casters (first for Clerics, second for Sorcs, both for Druids). So far I think you're good but I REALLY would think about raising speed a tad more. Meditation is for getting more of those sweet spell points which is rather important, two sorcs is a good idea since dark magic is OP as fuck in this game and Sharpmetal is God.

Looks alright man so far. The most important stats are raised to max (I would raise that personality up to 20 on cleric though) and you're ready to go. Read up what the colour codes are for stats cause barrels that raise stats are a thing.

So if you want to get in here's my recommendations:

Dungeon Crawlers: Start with Dungeon Master, then EoB1&2 (Fuck 3), Anvil of Dawn, Ravenloft games (Exceptionally good), Ultima Underworld. Dungeon Master 2 is very good but it's a very 'off' kind of a game.

Legend of Grimrock feels like Dungeon Master with a really nice facelift. 2 is way better than original

As for more story focused - Might and Magic Terra-Xeen cycle 3-4-5 and Enroth Cycle 6-7-8. Wizardry 6-7-8. Ultima 7 (8 is a disaster). Darklands, Darksun games, Albion

>>383171876
for M&M - GoG version has it already patched in I recall. Just wait for the sale

>>383171878
> Lands of Lore
I don't know, man. It kind of falls apart. I would say Wiz 7 is best story wise
> M&M3
It's more raw than 4&5, but damn I love Corak's notes and the open aspect of collecting keys.
> AoD
Pretty good pick, senpai.

>>383172385
M&M6 is that one game that I felt was a massive step back from Xeen trilogy. Xeen Trilogy is still the best music and intro wise. Lemme show you something

Muh nigga. Just grab the Sound Canvas sound fonts to fully experience that amazing music. The weirdest thing is how the FM Synth music still captures that epic feel for M&M4-5.

Also intro for M&M3 is underrated as fuck. You don't have that many games where the villain calmly addresses you before your quest daring you to defeat him.

That's what M&M always was. A little bit of cheese with a whole lot of serious - you have 5-series long vendentta and still there's some surreal humour to it either in the enemies looks or dialogue. Hell to get into Xeen's castle you had to get a fucking cupie doll.

>>383170776
man that's deep
What modern "AAA" game lets you do that?
>>
This game is not shovelware. It's not a casual game. It's not trying to appeal to a wider audience to make more money by dumbing down to lowest common denominator. Coming from a society that has dumbed down everything to cater to them since the day they were born, many newbs will wonder what the fuss is all about. Grimoire is for elite connoisseurs of computer roleplaying games with very refined tastes. If you don't think a game like Grimoire is worth $1000, much less $40 then you probably are not a fan of these kinds of games. You are welcome to look on the Steam store, on GOG, on Humble Bundle or anywhere on the internet to find a similar game. You won't find it because it doesn't exist. Even the Wizardry titles are just pale shadows of Grimoire now, they are forerunners but Grimoire gets it all right. Grimoire is the gold standard for these sorts of games. People who believe this was going to be just another blobber will discover they were sorely mistaken. Grimoire is the first and possibly last game of this calibre, at least until Grimoire II arrives.

P.S. After what is likely an opening discount, Grimoire will never be discounted or put on sale ever again. You will never see Grimoire sold for $15 but in 8 years you might see it down to $20. In the meantime, I guess you won't be playing this game if you're not respectful enough to pay what it is worth as product. I am amazed at the shovelware people pay $50 for without thinking but believe because Grimoire has an old fashioned aesthetic it must be worth less that those titles. Neanderthals have an older aesthetic too ... 300 pounds of muscle, six foot tall with an 1800 cc brain and the ability to see in the dark. I don't know that this implies they were inferior to modern people.

I hate how game romances are supposed to have "endings"

like
what the fuck does that even mean.

A game has a conclusion, fine, but romances have mini conclusions within them? Asinine! Either you break up or it's not over.

Maybe even GOTD.
A literal AUTIST made a game, having 23 YEARS at his hands to manually finetune every inch, bit, nook and cranny. EVERYTHING MATTERS!

The sad thing is that Cleve was right. I recall Wizardry Nemesis was supposed to be Wizardry 8 at first. And boy how bad Wizardry Nemeis s was you have no idea. Redguard was a competent game compared to it.

The problem with Cleve is the fact he is right to the bone about how bad things at Sir-Tech were just it is hidden under insane rants about his highly Neanderthalic genes.

I've always wanted to play Wizardry 7 but it looks like total eye cancer on modern computers. I don't mean in an art direction way (though that is bad too,) but in that the window the game runs in is a fucking mess so trying to play the game is nearly impossible. It's like the actual game window is a tiny brick surrounded by a giant grey mass, unless I run the game full screen, which makes it the wrong aspect ratio and the pixels look like total garbage scaled to 1440p.
