It isn't happening because TF2 is a fucking mess internally. Everything from the trading system, to item drops, to loadouts has been stitched together one piece at a time. The game just wasn't designed to have the features it does today. That's why it is an unoptimized pile of dogshit.

I wish I had it bookmarked but I think ValVe talked about porting TF2 in specific and said it would be easier to just build the game from the ground up on Source 2 than to port the current game we have today.

It doesn't help that the TF2 team consists of 13 fuckers, half of those don't even work on the game itself but rather they work on the art.

They have the money to do it, and they would probably profit in the end if they did. The problem lies in the fact that they have no staff. The entirety of Valve consists of around 360 people. To put that in perspective, the fuckers that work on RuneScape, Jagex, have around 500 employees, 12 dedicated to a classic client, another 50 on their card game, and the rest on a single MMORPG.

Valve is severely understaffed and it shows in almost everything they do.

Resources are going to Steam and VR R&D, TF2 is just being slowly eased off life support as the economy continues to very steadily slow down despite already being pretty old and crummy. Eventually major updates will cease completely and we'll only get very occasional balance updates and workshop additions, then workshop will be closed so that the game can finally die out over the course of five years, when the servers are finally shut down.

It has vastly less content, a small pool of maps with only a few good ones, the majority of updates are cosmetics and voice lines. On top of that games at high levels play out exactly the fucking same to the point where it isn't interesting to watch. Both teams huddle around a chokepoint spamming shit at each other until they have ults, then they all ult at the same fucking time. Reset and repeat until the game is over.

It's amazing when he left TF2 because the updates were only cosmetic garbage and were too infrequent yet goes to a game that does the exact same shit.
