I had a stranger walk out on me when we played Magic. I was maybe 12-13 and had been shopping for cards at a local nerd store. Some guy who was a few years older than me approached and challenged me to a game. I've known a few people who got it. One person got it a decade ago, she followed the doctors orders. She stuck to a liquid diet for a couple of months after the surgery. she is slim and looks good today. She says she never feels hungry, and she eats whatever she wants, just small amounts. Lost nearly 200 pounds and never gained it back.
Another one i know got it done and, while she has lost weight, she stopped losing after about 50 pounds. She claims she is hungry all the time. Then again she started eating solid food less than a week from surgery which might have fucked up the sleeve. Also the surgery itself could have been performed incorrectly. If they dont remove enough of the stomach, it simply will not work.

gastric surgery is a tool. Not a cure.
Provided he does as the doctors say, he could live a relatively normal life.

I think that people already know more or less what's healthy and most of the modern diets are looking for loopholes for people who wants to indulge themselves without getting porky. I think research should be focused on specific conditions where certain diets drastically affects the quality of life for the patients. For the general population it basically seems to boil down to "Eat moderate servings of balanced meals and work out".
