You're able to go literally anywhere at any time. Of course some areas have more dangerous monsters so if you suck at the game and are low lvl you will get raped, but that's every open world game.

It's because Gothic's open world is the perfect balance of size and quality.

It's not super huge, but everything was designed by hand and every enemy and item was placed with a purpose and intent. There's no procedurally generated landscape or enemies or loot in Gothic 2 / NOTR.

Its size was perfect to deliver diverse areas without anything feeling same-y and repetitive.

The progression was handled via enemy placement. More difficult areas were guarded by harder enemies. You either became very good at the game or you progressed as intended and levelled your character, with you as a player progressing along with the avator you're controlling.

Because enemies only respawned at set points in the story, you couldn't mindlessly farm and grind to become super OP either. The balancing was perfect.

Aside from the dated graphics and somewhat clunky controls, Gothic 2 NOTR is a shining example of an open world RPG, with almost everything done right and very little done wrong.

I wish more games were like Gothic 2, with the same lovingly crafted content and the same level of detail.

I'm hoping ELEX will finally deliver what I've been waiting for for almost 20 years now.

Did you play the expansion of 2 yet? I was in the same position as you were and holy shit, playing with the expansion for the first time was one of my favorite gaming experiences ever. The first two Gothic games were so successful (at least in Europe) that they competed with AAA title like Morrowind.

The one time they tried to develop a AAA RPG with Gothic 3, their publisher fucked them over and forced them to release the game over a year early.

I agree that Risen 2 and 3 were kind of shit because they were too desperate to catch the casual gamer crowd, but I'm still hoping that with ELEX they'll return to what made the first two Gothic games so good.

I liked Risen 1 well enough. I think it has the best combat system out of all PB games. (Which isn't saying much)

Risen 2 was kind of meh. It has some interesting ideas and quests, like when you have to use voodoo magic to take control of an NPC and fuck up his agenda to further your own goals, but all in all it was a very lackluster and disappointing game.

Risen 3 was better. I became a Firebender and had fun.

I loved Gothic 1 for some reason. I don't know why I liked the locations and the atmosphere. Some of the characters I found really memorable and somehow I got really used to the combat system. And also trickery of course because I'm a casual faggot so I glitched a little bit here and there for fun.

Gothic 2 I never managed to finish, maybe some other day when I manage to make it work properly. Everytime I try mods and such it decides to work as terrible as it can. I bet I would also have trouble with G1 nowadays though. I just don't know what to do in regards to this.

Gothic 3 I tried for a bit, it was painfully slow and stuttered a lot, and wasn't specially fun. However the music and the graphics I liked a lot.

Risen 1 would have been my favorite if only the fucking second half of the game wasn't complete and utter garbage. Really, it's a shame. I was surprised with the gameplay and it felt really comfortable to play, but then it shat the bed when they decided to make it a lizard killing, armor gathering simulator. It stopped being fun and the dungeons were just exhausting. And the last boss was... what the fuck was that even. Fuck.

Risen 2 I didn't play much. I couldn't get used to it.

And Risen 3 at first I didn't want to play much, but then I somehow really found it worth playing through. It was sort of mediocre all the way, but I liked it too. I would say that it's just not as good as the first chapters in Risen 1, and much better than the last ones. Its quality doesn't change much throughout the game. The last boss is shite though but who cares about the last boss at this point anyways.

Aright since this thread is pure shitposting let's at least do something productive.

The developer of Gothic games is called Pirahna Bytes.
The first two Gothic games were masterpieces, after that everything went to shit. At first because JeWood fucked them up and force released game in beta. Every Gothic after that is not made by PB.
Then something even worse happened to them than being Jewooded their company of 20-25 people started to change their senior developers for younger ones, this leaded to Pirahna Bytes wanting to chage the formula.
Though at first with Risen 1 they still adhered to the Gothic fans and tried to make a game that will satisfy their fanbase, which they did succesfully but it did lack graphics and animation.
In Risen 2 they decided to make some bigger changes. They focused on the pirate aspect of the game as well as making the UI abhorent shit + all downsides of the Risen 1. Story was also downgraded from above avereage to below avereage. (We da pirates mateys! We fight titans and shit!).
Risen 3 I did not play because i chould not force my self to experiance Risen 2 over again, though it's not exacly like Risen 2 it tried to revert back to the ways of Risen 1 but in the end was just Risen-lite.

Now they are creating new game called Elex, it's supposed to be mix of fantasy and sci-fi. I don't know how that setting will work, i hope story wil justify everithing. Though there is not much to be said other than this decision was made by the younger members of the PB who wanted to complely change setting from the Gothic in order to "be free" or they want to spread thir wings and don't want to nurture one series of games. These are gameplay videos and trailers and rest it for yourself to decide.

The great thing about Gothic was that it was part an action RPG and part an adventure game. The quests you got were often small puzzles which you could solve by listening to people, knowing your environments and thinking out of the box. Most recent open-world games lack those qualities because the developers don't think of including features from adventure games. Even games where investigation and exploration would work very well, like the crime scene investigation in Batman Arkham or Witcher 3, tend to hold the player by the hand or give him very clear choices of what he can do. There's no mystery, everything is highlighted, notified and categorized, which makes the whole experience feel way more artificial. You always feel like playing a game with set rules, not experiencing an adventure.
The game that best captured a similar feeling of mystery, danger and reward as Gothic is Dark Souls. Its way of careful exploration, environmental storytelling and making the player work for his victory feels very similar.
