In video games are "lives" canon? Like if Crash or Mario dies is he replaced by clone or what the fuck is going on? Also why other characters die permanently, but you can die as many time as you want as long as you collect lives
Like you collect gem then die by falling on spikes or something, but you get to keep the gem but are alive again?
But hey it's just a theory

Destroy All Humans

It's non diegetic, like the BGM and the GUI
its a fucking game. all lives do is serve as a counter for fuck ups until you get GAME over.
They are in demons souls. Dieing and returning to the nexus. Mario 64 tosses you out of the painting. Bios hock 3d prints you. Each death happens in one world.
In most other games though, its quantum immortality. Each life is a different reality where you didn't die at that moment.

Separation of Gameplay and story.
Souls games are an attempt to merge them, where everything you see is literally what's happening. If you, as a human sit by a bonfire, you'd see a guy materialize, run off, get killed, and materialize again.
Very rarely, but it happens.
Like that recent game with the bear, where everytime you die your corpse stays there the next time you play through.

And sometimes you can see a man in strange armor spin around constantly and perfectly hipshot crossbows while blasting weeb music.
