Only rich, intelligent folk had access to the internet and graphics cards required to play those games. That also meant that the average user was older because more work was involved in getting these programs to run.

Now any 10 year old with a chromebook can not only play these games, but stream them too. The democratization of games has made their playerbases all cancer, so you have to find segmented groups with rules and teamspeak.
