I slightly disagree with you on this one, friendo. The gameplay in Drakengard is repetitive and boring. The "only" things it has going for it are:
>Story
>Characters
>Atmosphere
>OST
>Psychological Effect on the player
I said "only" because it does so many things right, but the gameplay is such a letdown that it affects all the other aspects of the game.
I think, his Magnum Opus would be Drakengard, but with some gameplay elements of Nier 2: Return of the weeb-baiting Waifus.
His greatest/worst game of all time will be the last one he works on. Since his games always share the same theme of the Ultimate Sacrifice, which is often insignificant.

I don't really know. While it is flawed, there are no new games like the original Drakengard. Remaking it now would just be pandering to the audience, like OP mentioned.
Drakengard should stay Drakengard, but that doesn't mean that they can experiment on it's core formula when making a new game.

The success of Dark Souls started a trend away from the "we want the cowadoodie audience" model and towards more difficult games. I'd say that we've returned to at least pre-2007 levels of not building games around the absolute dumbest people that might play them.
