yes, but like, without the sarcasm. you'd want an understanding of how people learn, how people interact with games, what's fun, what isn't, what's been done, how tech both limits and enables a designer, how various demographics interact with various blah blah etc etc. you can't leave this shit to the programmers, they're retarded.

thing is that there's not really any kind of curriculum for it yet so they don't actually teach anything useful in the programs. but hey maybe one day developers will stop having to hire marine biologists
>>
Hey kids

No interviewer/employer gives a fuck about your degree. Only your job expierences related to the position and skills. And also if you know every detail about the company.

Pass all that then they'll throw you in the raffle hay of people with enough exoerience and basically draw you at random. Theyll give some bs reason to justify the lottery pick but thats all it us.

A masters in engineering or physics isnt going to make them go Lwow lets hire him cause hes smart"

Education literally doesnt matter

I flunked out of college because the mathfags decided exactly at the year I took my CS major to make discrete mathematics a requirement.
Now I'm stuck in my parents basement with no degree all because some turbo autists in the math department were losing money from no one taking their courses, and decided to force people to start taking them. I literally want to punch up any fag that claims that they got a degree in some mathematics field for fucking up the rest of my life.

expanding on this, i think its what a lot of us miss on the level of development when we think of a company's golden age vs. its current incarnation

yeah, you have the incredibly talented eventual CEO and CTO, but they bring along a host of underachieving early hires who actually know how to waste time in life and what wastes time best. If you've ever worked at a startup, you know these people, they come in late, dress sloppy, but they bring the fucking fire ideas and challenge the leaders on their bullshit in the way only old friends can.

the concept of an ideas guy is kind of tired, and almost completely negative, but those people with limited technical skills and a ton of passion are actually pretty useful when you're designing something for fun, rather than as a tool

And mostly they got memed this hard because the state of affairs in the western economy was so bad just as they got out of high school or college for the older anons.

Meanwhile we live in an age of unparalleled social and economic mobility, and we're about to experience an upset more than double the size of the industrial revolution as automation ramps up. What am I good at? Well I don't fuckin know, I can almost certainly fix any software problem if you give me an internet connection, and if I can't then at least find out why it's not working to begin with.
Apart from that I really have no idea. I've been studying all my life, but I have zero real world experience. All theory but no practice you could say.
Apart from knowing my way with general technology, I don't really know if I have other strengths.

My teachers from proper compsci subjects have been pretty terrible, but the teachers from math courses are usually brough in from the math school, so they are much more competent at actually teaching.
I just so happened to learn I hate programming. It's not like I did terrible in it, I just in all honesty wanted to break my neck when starting a program from zero, making it work, debugging it, etc. I can be very patient and meticulous if I need to, but programming tipped me over. I absolutely hated every second of the time I failed, and the time I passed.

It's the burger version of an entrance exam, I guess. You have to get a certain score total to get in, and a certain score on math for a math degree

All that shit you said about yourself qualifies you for one of the low level IT jobs like help desk, maybe sysadmin if you got other certificates (like A+ or whatever the shit is nowadays).

Who else here is a rich NEET?

>tfw never had to slave away at a uni for some meme degree just to go into debt.
>tfw never had to slave away at a job and loose my time and freedom.
>tfw never had to take out any loans.

Pic related is my bank account. I also have 350k invested in stocks and crypto. I have zero expenses and live in a 3,500 square foot luxury home in a gated neighborhood for completely free. I have unlimited free time for vidya, working out, reading. I will never have a need for a job. It baffles me that people willingly become slaves. I'll be enjoying my life of luxury and freedom as you slave your life away for the next 50 years just for a small taste at neetdom when you're old.

Experience would work, if you interview well. The job says Bachelors required but I didn't give a fuck and applied anyway since I had been in IT for 5 years at that point. It was geek squad retail work, but I knew what I was talking about in the interview.

Fast forward 4 years in that job and I just got promoted and making 50k a year now. I'm the most experienced on the team and the go-to person for complex issues or new technologies that need to be understood and create guides for the potatoes that cannot figure things out.
>>
>>382978952
Right? The "education is a meme" crowd needs to learn the difference between a real education and a business degree at a community college.

Oh the entrance exam, right.
I did alright on it I think, CS is high-ish when it comes to score needed to enter, just below things like medicine.
Funny enough, we did have a math evaluation exam too, which I failed horribly. When such a thing happens, the recommendation is to take precalc first, but I remember the lady that gave me my result telling me to double think that because the math in precalc is very different from the math taken in CS.
The first time I took prog I failed because of some shit that happened in the second test. I did so bad that I skipped the final test. I was doing alright up to when that happened, but I really didn't like it.
I feel like the making of those stupid little programs are part of the learning process so I can't entirely blame them for it, but it was painfully boring and frustrating what with the assignments I had to make on my own with my own wits and internet on my house.
My second prog teacher also gave assbackwards instructions for them, often contradicting themselves and just being overall a confusing ambiguous mess. Only reason I passed that was some emo dude that was actually really competent befriended me for some reason and helped me with the big assignments.

FYI kids from an actual game designer:
Pick a modern game designer. Not one who's also an EP.
Got that person in your mind?
Now find out if they're married.
Go ahead.
Oh, what's that?
They're not?
Yup.

Game Design is the ultimate pussy repellent for a few reasons:
>Almost no decent women are hired in vidya
>The ones that are have a 90001:1 girl:guy ratio, and will usually be in a tech city where they can get a CEO or brogrammer
>telling any decent girl you "work on video games" is heard as "i play with toys. that's my job"
>the smart ones know your work is unstable and usually by-the-project, unlike brogrammer two clicks down the Match.com list
>you will work long crunch hours and never have time to even go out to have a chance with said women
>your qt 3.14 shy but 9/10 nerdy gf is either not real, or was taken 10 years before you met her
>By the time you reach CliffyB/Romero status at a major company, you are 40, and probably en EP. Your chances of being famous enough for women to care about you are roughly 1-3%, even then
>You will never be the West's Miyamoto regardless

Depends on the CC.

Mine had a transfer program with my states thee major universities. All 60 credits of my Associates in Business went towards my Bachelors in Accounting.

Those 60 credit hours at the CC only cost 1/3 of what a uni would have charged so I saved a ton of money.

It's the CC lifers you need to look out for; the people who switched majors 3 times and love taking every 101 class offered.

Nah man, I'm more like you than you think. I put in 12 hours a day during classes and get low Bs/high Cs. Those straight A kids do exist though and I really envy them. It just kinda clicks for them and they're often pre-med students. The nice thing about Chem degrees is that even if you graduate with a 2.5 you're guaranteed a real job upon graduation or there are some Master's programs that will accept you. Low grades are a speed bump to success compared to other majors where low grades are a brick wall. As long as you continue to work hard it will eventually pay off one way or another.

Discrete math is definitely not upper level math. I took it as part of my lower division requirements for my CS degree at uc davis.
I took upper division math classes as electives because they were easier than most of the upper division CS classes (abstract math, number theory, combinatorics, euclidean geometry).
Besides, CS != programming. CS is math and theory heavy.

Starting out, unless you're done your homework and have experience, people are going to fuck up until they find their niche and streamline their operations so unless they have a decent amount of start-up capital to fall back on then their entire ship tanks at the first decent sized fuck up.

You need to have a rock solid business plan, proof of concept, financial backers and someone who knows how to execute said plan to make it work the first time.

Or you get lucky and a bigger company buys you out within your first year. That's honesty the best way to go for 80% of independent business owners.

That's what I am hoping for. My grades are shit because I'm not the smartest. Hopefully my research and being an officer in a club will help. Especially if I actually publish before I graduate.

Good luck anon, I haven't even thought of trying to do that since the research labs at my university are mostly to provide lab experience. One of my professors is working on polymers for pure white LEDs, but will probably take another decade before it shows any results taking undergrad students into account. One anon guessed right that I was on military scholarship. I'll get my undergraduate for free, do another 4 years of service (I'm a prior enlisted), then get a master's/phd for free with my GI Bill. All quite close, but not
answer was physics, which is funny since I know plenty of people in mathphys, chemphys and biophys

before someone rags on me, the practical applications come more from the data analysis side of things, as well as being able to construct and operate the systems and get them to do what you want, especially since theres definitely a programming element that's involved

anyways the downsides are
>advanced courses are demanding as hell
>degree never takes 4 years even if you arent doing honours because nobody that isn't crazy takes that many credits a semester in upper years
>because grad school is a sweet deal, everyone does it, so the undergrad isnt worth as much as it used to be, and competition for grad school is higher
>you cant talk about what you do to most others without them thinking youre a massive autist
>if you dont have at least decent social skills, youre double fucked, since much more of the program involves collaboration on homework and stuff then one would think
>seriously, that one group of people that are all friends and work together and help one another will top damn near every class, good luck being competitive with them
>no women anywhere, I know all of 10 in the entirely department
>>
>>382982723
You'd be surprised. Often Bio programs have more funding than Chem/Physics since its a soft science and more people sign up for it because its easier. You are right about Organic and Biochem though. Wrong.
I also took multiple tries to get past math and physics in college.
CC calculus 1 is the exact same as Uni calc 1. It might only seem easier if you actually take advantage of the fact that CC teachers have less students and more office hours. The actual "hard" classes are the upper level courses for the majors you can only find in university

The one thing I learned living among graduates in one of the top unis in the US is that everyone's depressed as fuck, nobody feels they deserved their place, and most of the students feel like they are doing the wrong thing.

But the difference is that although they don't have the passion for their fields, they work hard as fuck.

Passion and "loving your field" is a fucking meme. It only sounds good on the personal statement you write, but other than that it doesn't really exist - only in few cases when the field matches the person who is passionate about it, but it's somewhat rare.

Again Im speaking from my own experience and experience of people living in graduate accomodation

I also happen to have studied for my undergrad in the Uk and I can tell you that Uk's undergraduate system is superior, but the graduate stuff is way ahead in the US. The funding and the research done here is literally beyond anything taught in the UK.

It's just that I wanted to explain to the other anon who hated his field that "hating one's field" is a real thing and one should've give up (ie fucking drop off on 2nd year of masters) just because he lacks passion.

if you want to research science you need a PhD. doesn't matter what classes you take.

start researching professors you like. find one or two who's field you want to be in. stick with them, take all their classes, visit them in their office hours. tell them that you want to research so you want to apply for PhD. if you tell them in your second year, they will see that you are aiming for PhD already so they'll write that shit on your recommendation.

get good grades, get good recs, and apply to graduate school.

and most importantly don't listen to this fucker >>382989021
a PhD is a PhD, and yes it's flooded as fuck, but PhD opens a lot of doors outside of academia, especially in STEM fields (i'm talking about huge companies)

Everyone I've talked to says that a PhD has closed more doors for them than opened. There's only so many positions looking for a PhD, and anything else won't look at you for being overqualified. And academia sure as fuck isn't hiring, so what is there to do.
>>
>>382989073
It's a top school in my field. I don't care about overall rankings.

Also it's unfair to compare US medschool grads with UK. Uk's system is completely different, it's super fucking competetive - there's like what 5 unis that are allowed to confer MD degrees?

I faintly remember this because my buddy's sister was also in medschool in the UK, and they literally pick the best of the best not because they want to, but because there's literally no space. So your comparison is somewhat inaccurate.
