I'm still missing a decent few of the good SNES games, but I'm really lucky I own a lot of the more expensive ones still. Wish I could get a Mega Man 7 or Harvest Moon, I'll be damned if I pay that much for a video game.
>>
>>382960996

I've seriously considered stocking up on PS2 and OG Xbox games since you can get them for next to nothing right now. It's like N64 and SNES games were in the early 2000s.
>>
>Go to flea market just for shits and giggles
>Browsing the SNES alley to laugh at the ridiculously exhorbitant prices these scalping faggots are willing to put up.
>A link to the Past, a super common game, is 70$
>Look to the game right beside it.
>Another ALTTP cart with a sticker written "Reproduction" on
>It is also exactly 70$

I was talking to a guy I know who owns a retro shop where he collects and sell nothing but top maintained games either boxed or not and even he explained to me that the prices everyone sells old games for are inflated a sfuck and nowhere near representative of the actual value of the game. It's just a bunch of scalping faggots who inflate prices so they can sell a damaged cartridge at twice its full value just because they're the onky ones still selling these games.
>>
>>382962112
I built mine Saturday my buddy is suppose to send me his game files. Right now I just have the two snes power Ranger games. Nes metroid and final fantasy. Also have Fire red and a hacked fire red room (sweet version)

It's ridiculous, and even worse that people pay these prices for this shit. I literally just went on ebay this morning out of sheer curiosity to see how much Harvest Moon on the SNES was going for. There are these fags selling it for like 210$ with half the label ripped off.

You just gotta camp out and monitor auctions and wait for the deal to spring up, if it isn't one of the crazy priced ones like EVO you can generally get a fair priced auction within a week as most of these games are in high stock and only inflated due to the market brute forcing its prices. There's a shit ton of auctions of Crash Bandicoot N Sane going for the retail of $40 but there's a few trying to force $60 for example.

Keep an eye out for high auctions that have been sitting with Best Offers and try to make them budge 20%-30% (I've gotten people to drop 40%-50% for high cost items) or auctions with slight unnoticeable flaws or low activity. Ideally there's two or more running low cost auctions as the one that ends sooner will attract the most aggressive buyers and distract from the other. I also recommend going for CIB games as sellers think their carts are worth gold and barely discount from complete sets and they'll be that much more collectible in the long run.

Retail game locations are a hit and miss, most of them charge crazy prices but I supposed if you made friends with one they might give you fair deals. Everything went downhill when the amiibo crazy hit (got worse with NES mini) and it's just a matter of surviving in this collecting market. I don't ever see the prices going down from here although they'll stabilize a bit as people won't have enough money to pay the prices if they go any higher.

2. Getting a flashcart would probably kill any desire to collect games.

I bought Megaman X3 boxed for FIFTY FUCKING BUCKS back when I was 13 years old in 2004. Now a boxless cartridge with a badly damaged sticker goes around for 380 bucks. You can't tell me that in the span of a mere 14 years the value of the game has fucking tripled? How do you justify this? How do you justify selling a reproduction cartridge for the same price as an original? These are all issues part of having to deal with retro game sellers nowadays. I remember one of my friend bought the rarest game on SNES, apparently being Aero Fighter, for 180$ at an Ebay auction and back then, we both thought it was a lot of money for an old game and My rarest game, being Megaman X 3, is worth the double of that ammount a mere 10 years later.

>>
>>382964820

It's worse, it didn't triple in 14 years it tripled in about two years when a mixture of Amiibo scalping, NES mini scalping, media hype & youtubers drew attention to old games as profit. I have a copy of Metal Storm I've had since I was a kid and I remember being pleasantly surprised it was worth 50 bux a few years ago. It's now worth in the hundreds.

Fair point.
Guess I'll just cap off the repro stint with SMT2 and then just stick to flash carts from here on out. For some reason I can't help but like having copies of these games as if they were authentic. But yeah, if I were to go full repro I'd generally be funneling money for no real reason, especially since some games keep getting new translations, like Fire Emblem 4 (which still isn't finished)
>>
>>382965139
I would say just buy a real jap copy and play them via flash cart for English. I own some jap games that are text heavy, don't play them but I like having a real copy. Repos are just a huge waste of time to me.

I'd love a Terranigma reproduction, but I don't know how to guarantee it would be the NTSC-patched English ROM and I'd want it to be on a normal gray cart.
>>
I lived in a family where whenever I got a new console I had to give up my old one + games to a cousin or something. Luckily for me we somehow managed to keep all my old SNES & N64 games. I don't have anything particularly rare but I do have all the staples. Marios, Donkey Kongs, Zeldas. Based on the prices of the local classic vidya shop I realized I have about $700 worth of classic vidya.

Point being if there's 1 game I'm missing I don't mind spending some cash considering my collections are pretty much complete already.
>>
>>382966597

>>
>>382966624

I had friends that had EVO Search for Eden among a lot of other games that skyrocketed in value. When we hit our teens I asked them what happened to all their games when we moved on to Playstation/n64 and they said their mom gave them away to some baby cousins.

I can just imagine those games getting shipped to South East Asia and rotting there somewhere.

>Earthbound at this point costs $160
Factor in shipping to Australia plus exchange rates and holy fuck this hobby is expensive. Luckily this was a few years ago now so it's not as bad as if I were to buy everything at once, today; but still. I think if I buy anything else for my SNES it'll be an Everdrive because games like Megaman X3, Lufia, Pocky and Rocky, Hagane, Gargoyles Quest, etc. are just ludicrously expensive. I play all these on a HDCRT with an RGB-modded SNES mini and OEM controllers so it's otherwise as close to the genuine experience as one can get.

People who buys retro games always use they excuse that they want to play. But thats a load of bullshit. They just want to hoard the fucking cartridges in a box and try to get some nostalgia for having a piece of plastic in a shelf.

So honest question. Why the fuck has the retro market spiked up so much?

SNES and Saturn U.S. in particular have really soared and I cannot understand why other than it's become cool to buy retro games.
>>
>>382972890
I don't know, maybe I'm totally 'old school' but I would still rather play on the actual cartridge. However, I do agree for the most part and I'm not inclined to repros since I own a couple myself (mainly ones that are english translated), but I won't buy a loose snes game for $100 since that's ridiculous, but if I can find it at a good price I'll jump on it.
>>
>>382972890

off the top of my head i have megaman x2 and x3, earthbound and steel battalion with the controller
>>
>>382972157

Till about three years ago the only games that were expensive were ones that were truly rare or niche, things like Lunar, Earthbound, certain Sega CD Titles. Now some of those games are considered cheap by today standards, others are off the map and all the famous titles even if there's 500 listings have jumped to over a hundred purely because they're famous brands that got revived and noticed by new generations or older generations got into the scalping market and everyone price matched.

Every big name game is expensive, Sonic Adventure 2 is 60 bucks, Super Mario RPG is 120, NES Zeldas are 50+, all the Mario Parties which everyone and their mom had are 80 - 100 + etc.

If you want to start collecting shit from your childhood start buying into your favorite PS1, Dreamcast games now since they're teetering on the next booms with Gamecube and PS2 following very close soon after. Genesis is somewhat ignored except for a few titles but watch out since that Sonic movie is coming in a year or two.

You should see the price of old super soakers or certain toys.

It's basically what you said, the generations that grew up on NES & SNES are now in their 30s or late 20s so they have disposable income and nothing better to do. Hipster types also are getting in with exposure from Nintendo collectable successes, Youtubers & movies like Wreck-It-Ralph. Information and markets move faster now so sellers develop a sort of subconscious collusion when one starts raising their price, combine that with people like you suddenly having an urge to pick up their favorite older game but with the difference of not knowing good pricing they assume it's the norm and feed the supply/demand.

I honestly thought it had something to do with certain Gamestops now buying/selling older titles. Gamestop is everywhere, so I kind of figured when people who know next to nothing about games try to figure out how much to price a game for they'd look at widespread retailer. Gamestop would be the first one to come up and they'd put it at or around that price.

Every time a "Hidden gems for X console" video is posted, the price of your favorite game goes up by $5.

The fact that an unremarkable game like Earthbound costs over $50, let alone over $200 is what confirms that being a retro game fan has LITERALLY become a meme.

Games that received the Player's Choice mark, meaning it sold MILLIONS and there are LITERALLY MILLIONS of carts of these games out there, making them as common as any sports game regardless of quality, being expensive as fuck is fucking ridiculous. I shouldn't have to pay over $60 for Super Metroid or Super Mario All-Stars. I can't wait for the retro bubble and retro meme to finally end.

Tell me what makes Earthbound a "masterpiece". The whole sucking Earthbound's dick meme started a few years after Smash Bros was released, and literally nobody knew who Ness was prompting hipsters and speculators to overhype the Mother and Earthbound games. It is a very outdated, very ugly looking game that's been surpassed many times by superior games even on the same console.

I can understand something like FF VI or Chrono Trigger being overhyped, but those games deserve all the praise they get. Earthbound is a very average RPG that came way too late to a platform that was chock full of games that kicked its ass in every aspect.

It was just a nice game with some unique elements. It had a original tone and setting unlike any other console jrpg. It was laid back and had a humorous tone to it. It was basically DQ in gameplay but added some dice elements such as enemies appearing on the overworld, the odometer for health, and the instakill feature.

There's no sense in buying retro physical now that reprocarts are becoming widespread. You're paying 200$ for something that more than likely isn't authentic. If it's something that can't emulate well then sure, but otherwise you're better off just emulating or getting a flashcart.
>>
>>382978603
It's overrated but it's definitely not bad. It's mostly about the experience rather than the game being deep or revolutionary on a mechanical scale. Obviously it can't match most Square affairs but it isn't really trying to. I think its biggest issue was not offering anything new in the gameplay department. Mother 3 at least has the rhythm gimmick.

I work at a used vidya store and we just sold a shrink-wrapped smash 64 for quite a pretty penny. It came from a good will one of the store owners frequents and when he was buying it he had to yell at the cashier to stop when the reached for scissors to get the shrink wrap off and make sure the game was in there. That shit was his pride and joy for years but you cant say no to cash

>Yakuza games are "cheap" compared to prices for 2 just last year.
That's because they just re-printed 1-4 earlier this year. Yakuza 2 was like $160 in January and then $50 in February because of it.

Do it Mohammed, do it for all of us.
>>
>>382980227
Oh I got a famicom way back, but you need a special power adapter because voltage in the US is too powerful for these japanese electronics, it'll fry them over time.
>>
Could one replace the ROM in a Japanese version of a game with the English version?
e.g. Could you put an English FF6 ROM into a Japanese SFC copy of FF6?
>>
>>382979534
Only if the name of the channel is called Game Jihad.
>>
>>382980463
It's not quite that easy.
>>
>>382980521
Well duh.
I mean, could someone with experience in (de)soldering ROM chips (can't recall the proper term) do that?
Because I was wondering if this could make getting English MMX2/3 and a lot of RPGs easier
>>
>>382979871
My Mega Man V I got it by trading a kid years ago for Solar Striker, the only SHMUP Nintendo has ever made. I never could have suspected that game would be that expensive.

Sorry, I meant to type that they were reprinted like the SMT games were in 2012.

>Saw my original 2 boxes and I paid 40$ each the first time I bought them

I gotta keep better track of things.

Ill be going to Japan soon but i dont know much about rare japanese games. ill obviously look for Mother games and limited/special edition jap consoles but is there anything else?
>>
>>382980749
Ah ok. Yeah there always seems to be a Nintendo tax on used games. The rarity or demand of a game doesn't matter when it comes to Nintendo. I remember a thrift store I went to had Madden 2005 for PS2 and Gamecube. PS2 version was selling for $2.99 and the Gamecube version was selling for $12.99
>>
I bought Faxanadu for 4 buck the other day
Not sure why when its censored and I always just buy the japanese one
>>
>>382981062

Yes, watch this before you plug in a japanese console in the US and blow a fuse in it out of ignorance about power conversion.

Is it censored? I recall it being surprisingly intact, like leaving in smoking

>or stuck behind the counter with inflated prices

I walked into Value Village the other day. They had a kinda beatup copy of Metroid Prime 2 sitting there, only $80. That's Canadian, but I'm sure they just saw the Prime Trilogy price on eBay and didn't know the difference.

There's many versions depending on what you want to do with them. Some have fancier features and bigger ROM capacities.
