Had this happen with a Nintendo card and Nintendo was very helpful!!
Also had this happen with like a random prepaid debit card and the lady at the gas station was NOT helpful when in went back.

Thats weird. I've had nothing but good experiences with xbox support. Ive never paid for another controller because microsoft kept sending me free ones when i told them mine werent responding that well. Got 3 xbox one controllers and 2 360 controllers
