The sound design of the first few games is the best the genre or maybe video games in general have to offer.

Mount the ISOs of 2 & 3, and then run their installers like always.
The SH1 is a PS1 rip that you gotta emulate.
The "sh2proxy" is a all-in-one fix, that works as a no-cd crack as well. It is included in the pack.
If you use the NEW fix mentioned in the guide, you can use the sh2proxy's EXE as the no-cd crack!

In case you experience issues saving the game / not being able to edit the disp.ini, make sure the files aren't set to "Read Only", and run the game as Administrator.
If SH2 gets stuck in a black screen upon launch, close it and re-start it again.

SH2-4 do not support Xinput gamepads. Either use Xpadder, a DirectInput pad, or just play with KB+M.
You can now see some decent emulator settings for SH1 as well in the guide. If the image of the game does NOT fill your entire screen in fullscreen mode, check your plugin AND GPU control panel's image scaling settings!
Also give the new PGXP emulator a shot for a lot less wobbly PS1 graphics.

>Protips
Play in release order, never below Normal modes, always lower the Brightness, replaying very recommended.

An outsourced rape title, like the past 4-5 SH-related games? Sure.
Konami itself has never ever really cared about SH in the first place. Team-Silent went through the KojiProd's fate, over a decade earlier.

Believe it or not, yes.
The first time(s) I played SH1 and 2, I easily dismissed a lot of things as totally random shit, meant only for spooks and mindfuck.

Later on when I started to replay the games and also visit SH forums etc, I started to realize how much I'd missed, and how damn naive and stupid I'd been.
I'd recommend the same to you: replay the game(s), pay attention to things, explore places, try to get other endings. I bet you'll start to see the whole picture well.

Once you've finished SH1-3, maybe 4 as well, there's numerous sources to start digging deeper into the series actually deep and well structured lore. I know I'll prolly get some flak for this, but look up TwinPerfect's "TRSHE" series on Youtube for some veeery in-depth analysis and explanation vids.

Skilled and dedicated team, with god-tier artists.
It's even more impressive knowing these are PS2 titles. SH1 looks damn good for a console game running on some 1994-tier tech.

>inb4 "T-they CHEATED!!" posts.
>>
>>382956304
Expert use of lighting and other tricks. A lot of the levels are actually pretty bleh in brighter detail, but the team figured out ways to mask everything so not only did they make each location atmospheric as fuck, but also get away with things that would have strained the PS2 if they had tried going all out with the system's power. It's one of the better examples of how minimalist design can make a greater statement than just pouring resources into the graphics.

>>
>>382943389
Shattered Memories is the worst of all.

Not scary, only one monster, all items are useless, the puzzles are stupid. You always know when the enemies are coming, which completely destroys the horror aspect of the game. Combat is replaced with lame chase sequences. The story is incredibly cringe-worthy in both content and execution.

Finished SH1 this month, really liked it. The only problem for me is that the game lose most of the sense of danger after the hammer, only used guns for bosses.
>>
>>382951319
No, it's because no-name talentless studios are super cheap and can easily be bullied by the publisher when it comes to release dates and such.
>>
>>382957537
It's because people love to mention that SH1's fog was to circumvent the PS1 hardware limitation but get butthurt when others mention that the same exact technique was used in SH2/SH3 to circumvent the PS2's hardware limitations as well.
>>
>>382957582
Shattered Memories is the best adventure game to be released after the year 2000. It honestly shouldn't have even had the chase sequences, they were absolutely the worst part of the game. If it had just been exploring the town, finding the phone messages and whatnot, and focused more on solving puzzles, it would have been one of the best games of the generation.
>>
>>382960650
Why the hell would anyone get upset about atmosphere being used to get around hardware limitations?
>>
>>382960650
Well that's silly. It's not like the PS2 was that limited, the team was just using what had worked for SH1 because they saw no need to change what wasn't broken. Even then, the 2nd-4th games had a lot more environmental detail than the original ever did.
>>
>>382957582
>>382960941
Shattered Memories is one of my favorites of the series.

The fear factor's definitely on the weak side, but I thought the psychological aspect of the story was up there with SH2.

story had some ok moments, though it was marred by the fact that they stole the premise of the original game to give it a framework instead of something completely original.
>>

The remake setup is completely unnecessary, but different enough that it doesn't really bother me.

Wish that they had just been allowed to tell the story with their own characters though so more people would let it stand on its own.

Psychosomatic horror is always better than cultist drama. There's just more wiggle room, you can do more with a lot less. When the occult comes into play, you have to develop the story in a way that the budding imagination is kept intact, otherwise the audience will just expect more jump scares and witchcraft/novelty. It's naturally difficult to write a horror story involving the occult.
>>
>>382966945
>It's naturally difficult to write a horror story involving the occult.
not really, thats like saying its hard to write a story about a cop drama.

cults are a group think thing, you can go so many places with that kind of story.
>>
>>382966945
>>382967128
Cult stories only work IMO when a bunch of people are involved, and that's the last thing I want from Silent Hill or any horror game.

The cult stuff was just fucking fine. It's only really prominent in the first and third games, and barely has presence in the second and fourth (with the latter only being a catalyst for things). It was only Homecoming and the movies that fucking overdid and made the cult this Umbrella-like group of cunts.
>>
>>382967260
>when a bunch of people are involved

every good silent hill game had multiple side characters.

like are you serious right now?
>>
>>382966143
People don't seem to respect The Suffering's monster design because they think it was made by some low-budget designer, but the creatures were actually designed by Stan Winston, the guy who designed the Predator(1987) and The Thing(1982) and also the guy responsible for making the Alien look as close as possible to the H.R Giger's art.

Downpour is just terrible, one of the worst designs i've ever seen in horror.

I liked SH3, but I feel like the cult business did take up a bit too much of the spotlight when they could have focused more on Heather's character and psychological state.

Straightforward revenge against a cultist who does evil things because she thinks happiness is bad wasn't the strongest premise of the series.

>>382967785
easy

focus on a few members and have the rest be a faceless mob that are litterally just sillouettes.

now you've got a cult and a really unnerving set piece that you can work with.
>>
>>382967594
No, just a shitty Shyamalan twist I thought of before where you are playing as identical twins who are separated, but the player doesn't know its twins until late in the game. It would mislead you into thinking you're playing as one person but instead you are jumping between the two. With the way the environment can abruptly change and have nonsensical layouts on SH I thought it could work.
>>
>>382967538
I don't really care who designed them, they're corny. I mean they kind of fit the game but they wouldn't work in SH, which unfortunately Vatra was not aware of.

The town's like psychonauts, any conceptual idea regarding guilt, grief, or unhealthy emotional baggage could be played up with interesting symbolism if you weren't worried about overusing the premise.
>>
>>382967895
had one where you're from the time before the red and yellow god. would make it like early 1800s extremely orthodox looking. back when it was basically hell on earth. kind of like the VVitch.

and people never died back then, so their souls kind of just rotted and roamed around looking for things to inhabit. They'd start taking over inanimate objects until they had like their own body or something.

and people that die would just wake up the next day in their bed forgetting everything because their body was destroyed but the soul reformed it.

then you'd have like a main character that didn't die yet and is starting to snow ball information about whats going on.

There was some more and I made some basic monster sillouetes for fun

I actually liked the idea of Homecoming as far as exploring the unwarranted neglect between an unwanted child and their parents in a seemingly normal family.

But the SH2 styled twist was pretty obvious from the get-go, and the cult super-villainy kind of watered down any emotional spark they were building up.
>>

I'd probably have few other characters in the game. If they're twins maybe they are looking for each other. I figure if that's the case maybe they fear being alone and so they are isolated during the game. As for clothes, I don't really know. Maybe each time the perspective shifts the character faints or something, and the other one wakes up in different clothes. Come up with some asspull for why their clothes keep changing like maybe they were always moving or something and it fucked with them, who knows. They could even comment like "why are my clothes different?".

Speaking of clothes, say what you will about the movie but one thing I really liked about it was how Rose's clothes changed colors gradually. I thought it was a neat touch.

you know it's pretty interesting how it works actually

like the western devs do something more direct and cognisant. like they're trying to tell you something from the design.

while the eastern ones actually rely on subconscious stuff. Like how the cult leader in 3 doesn't have any eyebrows, just so you can't read her emotions and tell what shes thinking. This doesn't tell you that shes untrustworthy but you're brain thinks it.

That and a lot of stuff in the eastern ones are never explained but they have a reason to be there. which creates a consistency in the unexplained. which is pretty cool

Detention was pretty good, its on steam.

Its 2D point and click, the characters and stuff look a lot like junji ITO and the design looks like something out of the background of a low budget shaft scene (which looks really creepy and uncanny).
