Only if you're a jap was the saturn even remotely comparable to the PS1, otherwise it was overpriced and got far fewer games. Dreamcast could've competed with the rest of sixth gen I think if Sega already hadn't dug themselves such a huge hole. Don't blame Sony, Sega's retarted policies of the 90's doomed them, the 32x and CD should never have seen the light of day and the Saturn from its launch was managed horrifically. By the time they got back on track with the DC it was too late.

They actually weren't they were half the power with some features that weren't even close to becoming mainstream at the time. Novel ideas, killed by incompetency. The biggest reason was Sega was trying to be Nintendo and shit on third party more at the time.
Sony was open to the idea of having developers come in and they went as far to provide dev kits to regular consumers. The PS1 was revolutionary for this as well had some big names come to it at the time like Final Fantasy because Nintendo shut them out with stupid shit like cart tech will last forever.
PS2 was a dvd player that was half the price of a dvd player and played games. Who wouldn't want one at the time. Demand simply skyrocketed when Saddam was announced to be stockpiling them for a missile program. "The most powerful gaming machine in the world, may also be the most powerful computer."

Playstation had way more fucking games. Like someone already explained PS1 dev kits were extremely cheap, it was cheap to distribute games (compared to N64, probably same as Saturn though), but the biggest kicker was that the hardware was simply way better for 3D games and easier to develop for. Dreamcast was excellent and had amazing games and definite ports of many multiplats but Sony was a train with no brakes by the time PS2 rolled out.
