It had amazing multiplayer for its time. Multiple viable builds. Loot grinding that felt meaningful and accomplished, same with grinding out xp in baal runs for one more level up. It's a great game. Just because you don't "get it" doesnt make it less so.

The atmosphere is fantastic. It's one of the most immersive games I've got to play, but I guess nostalgia also somewhat plays a part in that. Character progression is also really, really satisfying, the game is fast, randomized maps make it much less of a chore to replay than something like Grim Dawn, and there are quite a few ways to play it so it doesn't get stale.
It's not so much the story that's great, it's the setting, the atmosphere. The music and artstyle. Even the damn menu looks great.

RPGs are from a bygone era only now represented in "cRPGs".
With the ability to increase fidelity in all character senses there's little need to form an additional abstraction to represent player skills, so RPG now tends to imply overarching stories and character development in those stories.
