Demons don't seem super concerned about personal self-preservation anyway, and it's completely believable that they just hope they'll be able to take down Doomguy.
If you play on the harder difficulties you'll know that it's entirely plausible for them to actually succeed and kill you, so it's not too much of a pipe dream.
