It's actually a lot easier with classes simply due to them removing the damage cap making a lot of the classes more viable like black mage and knight in comparison to the combo spam ones like samurai and hunter which were basically things you could have one of in the original due to genji gloves.

It's a pretty straightforward two-handed weapon damage dealer, not much to it. It's unique in that katanas use strength and magic to calculate damage so certain characters are better suited to it than others.

Late game it can also serve as a tank with the Genji Shield and the Masamune I

I don't fucking understand this at all. What happened to the job grid weird shit? I remember struggling to unlock the ability to have fucking HATS. I have a demo disc from DQVIII still that is nothing like the full game apart from a beach. What the shit is this? What's the point of this? The only thing I know is that they're adding a 4x speed mode for the game's admittedly pretty slow combat.

Out of curiosity what did you find hard? The only hard things before the lighthouse was the caverns which also have one of the strongest enemies in the zodiac version and some optional hunts/espers for me.

I was disappointed in Balthier as well after all i had read about him. He's suave and he looks like a good friend of mine but i kept wondering why does he stick with these jokers ?
They keep throwing him and fan into life threatening danger with no treasure or paiement in sight, is he really a pirate ? Airship fuel doesn't pay for itself.
Asche and Bash were the ones i liked because they had a real motivation and a goal.

Looking about it more:

>Ashe: Time Mage/Knight (or red mage/knight, she's a time mage in Revenant wings)

Reasoning being that samurai fits Balthier's motif of being a rebelling judge without having the form and statue of a knight. It seems a bit looser.

Ashe is seen with sword and shield in cutscenes.

Basch is a knight first and foremost and Ulhan fits the heavy armored and intimidating aspect of this.

Man, some of those monsters were pretty cool. Also, some were plain weird. Like that shadow thing that summoned(?) other monsters or something. Maybe I'm thinking of a different game, but I remember some kind of black humanoid thing that had other monsters in the fight with it.
Was that FF12?

Regardless, the point is some of those special hunt monsters were really interesting and neat.

Highly excited. FFXII is my favorite mainline FF, and the new dual job system is poised to solidify the game's position, at least for me, at the top. I'm thinking of playing with the English voices this time but have two questions:

1. If I buy here in Japan via PSN, can I select English voice acting but keep everything else in Japanese?

2. Are the English voices really that good or have I been misled? I cannot get an accurate feel from short clips on Youtube.

Also, list your planned parties below. Here is what I'll be running for my first playthrough:

Vaan: Foebreaker + White Mage

Balthier: Monk + Black Mage

Fran: Archer + Bushi

Basch: Time Mage + Red Mage

Ashe: Shikari + Machinist

Penelo: Uhlan + Knight

Note that this time around license islands allow for more creativity in planning your characters. For example, my Fran will be able to access the two HP augments locked behind the Famfrit esper on the archer board without actually taking the exclusive Famfrit space. Instead, Fran unlocks her mist knack level 4 on the bushi board, gaining access to the 435HP augment on the archer board. Fran thus “teleports” to the license island locked behind Famfrit, at which time we can grab the adjacent 390HP augment. This frees up the Famfrit esper for another character (Ashe in my case). With careful planning, you can have your cake and eat it too – the best of both worlds – and many other clichés.

If you have any questions about how the two-job system will work or want recommendations for combos or espers, give me a reply. I have spent a fuckload of time in Excel mapping out my party mixes and license paths, so a lot of this is second-nature to me.

No. They are both excellent jobs. The machinist makes a great choice for a second job if you don’t know what else to choose.

In brief, RDM gives a shit-ton of magic lores, which makes the character holding the job a full-blown black mage in power, even if the first job is physically-focused. White magic will be at level 2 by default but can be enhanced to level 3 with an esper unlock, meaning the RDM can be one of your primary healers for the most part of the game if you will it. The esper system allows you to make the RDM into whatever you want and allows it to be easily added to any type of class.

If you are running a mage-type character, the RDM gives you the ability to unlock 4 greatsword licenses and 3 heavy armor licenses to compensate in the physical field. You’ll have an actual full-blown warrior or full-blown mage depending on your 2nd job and license unlocks – this is not a watered down warrior + mage. The downside of RDM is the relative lack of abilities, so you’ll want to plan out your specialization (e.g., white magic) in advance.

MCH allows your party to have two time magic casters, if you choose to unlock the Famfrit-locked licenses. I think it’s a no brainer: Famfrit should go to MCH unless you’re running a time-mage/machinist hybrid. Another reason MCH makes a great supplementary class is its 3 guaranteed swiftness licenses: Think of MCH as adding speed to a character, both in action and in magic.
