Why the fuck did little hub worlds that do nothing but add more time between getting from level 1 to level 2 become a thing? This shit is a complete waste of time.

In many ways, Sonic Adventure was a product of its time. It had a hub world because, well, other big name platformers at the time like Banjo, Spyro and of course Mario 64 had one. It had a whole bunch of playable characters because the notion of having multiple characters to play as was a big selling point in 3D platformers at the time (see: DK64 and its five playable characters each with their own fucking set of collectibles, people sperging out over Luigi being in Mario 64, etc), and admittably it was kinda impressive at the time that SA had six of them, each with their own completely different gameplay style.

The reason the game even had a more realistic art style in comparison to the Genesis games was because they wanted to show off how powerful and high tech the Dreamcast was during that time. It's even why they went with Chaos as the main villain, as they wanted to showcase a character previous console hardware couldn't dream of rendering.

The hubworlds are just another place for me to do cool tricks with sonic's physics. I don't mind it.

In really, really small doses, hub worlds are ok. They are a highly flavoured menu-screen without any chance of an exciting encounter. It's a waiting zone where you put up with a bunch of boring shit (fetch this, find that, talk to her) to get back to the excitement.

On the other hand, shit like Skyrim is like, 60% hub world, with minimal chance of encountering excitement. Remember when games didn't have huge dickless stretches of nothing threatening? It's just filler based game design, which is easy as fuck to do, and it still sells to autists and sick people looking for long-term relief from their games.

People act like this 18 years old game does so many wrong things, they were probably 3 years old when it came out and never experienced how awesome this game truly was. Yeah, it's flawed and has some bad glitches, Amy is boring and Big isn't much fun. But everything else was nothing short of stunning when it came out.

But it's in continuity with them, and is in fact the culmination of 8 or so years of storytelling and characterization. So no it's no reboot, considering the series got a soft reboot right after. It is the third game using that structure which is why it's sometimes referred to as a technical Sonic Adventure 3. It does not continue in with any previous Sonic games, the blue chaos emerald is in an infinite loop making it impossible to be obtained outside of this timeline.

It can just as well be a reboot even with a reboot coming out later to show what a failure this reboot is, similar to the Spiderman films.

It added more depth to the new Sonic world. It's actually quite a shame they didn't have enough time to incorporate similar hubs into Adventure 2.
