Are mechanical keyboards just a meme or are they actually worth it?

What do you use /v/?
>>
I fell for the red switches meme

it's the worst keyboard I've ever used

Mostly a meme, but I don't really regret my purchase. At least this shit doesn't break, more than I can say for a meme "gaming" mouse.

I like my Model M, the best feeling keyboard I've ever used. Thing is that it's loud as fuck, which shouldn't be an issue for /v/irgins

On the cheap side you can get mechanical keyboards made by chinks who cloned Cherry MX blue keys and they work great as well. For $30 you can get an HCman tenkelyless RGB keyboard with an aluminum back plate for like $30 through Amazon Prime
>>
Total meme for vidya.

Are you one of the following:
>esports digital athlete
>computer enthusiast who spends most of his time on PC and wants the best
>someone with money to burn on luxury
If yes, then mechanical keyboard might just be the thing for you. Even then, you're damn fine without it. DO NOT let peer pressure affect your decision.
>>
Personally, I like the tactile feel and the sound confirmation of the keys. Feels more responsive to me than the average membrane. It helps that, with proper cleaning and care, my mechanical keyboard has lasted me years more than my old membrane one did.
It's all personal preference, and I'm sure there are some good membrane boards out there, but since I also write in my spare time I prefer mechanical.
By the way, as long as you're not slamming the keys it shouldn't really be any louder than a standard keyboard. I do tend to slam the keys when I'm typing faster though.

>>
they're better in every way and not even expensive

you have to be a contrarian retard to be against them
>>
>>382826901
Nah they're completely different than the popular Cherry MX switches and other modern switches

Buckling springs still actually hit a membrane, but they're very precise in doing so and never wear out like a rubber dome does. The sound you hear is the exact moment when the spring buckles and actuates the membrane

I can confirm mechanical keyboards are not a meme. I've got a Corsair STRAFE with Cherry MX Red Silent switches. Mechanical keyboards feel great, they can also be bought easily for under $50, they probably won't make you type faster or perform better at gaming but it's like having a luxury car with comfy leather seats vs a econobox with shitty fabric seats.

I can also confirm Cherry MX Red Silent switches aren't a meme either. They are very quiet when typing and near silent while gaming. If you don't want a mechanical keyboard because of the noise, get the silent switches.
>>

>>
>>382823245

>>
The things that "mechanical" keyboards do better than non ones is stuff that can be achieved with rubber dome just fine if all they did was specifically target certain areas that non-mechanical keyboards typically fail at.
>>
>>382829085
Rubber domes feel like shit and wear out over time
And they're almost always really fucking cheap

Meanwhile even cheapo $30 mechanical keyboards are put together really well
>>
>you share a board with people that cant afford a k70
>you share a board with people who dont use a k70

I Hate all you poor brazilian niggers. Get a fucking job
>>
I've heard that mechanical keyboards don't lock your keyboard presses when you press, let's say, three keys at once as opposed to the membrane keyboard. Is that true? Because that would be a deal breaker for me.
>>
>>382829423
What?
>>
>>382828852
Actually the Corsair STRAFE was the cheapest way to get a full keyboard with MX Cherry Silent switches. It also has a warranty. Doesn't have excessive wizbang gayman buttons or other "features". Has a windows key lock button in the upper right, to disable the windows key, which I love. Very solid, heavy construction, the quality is evident.
>>
>>382829423
See:
>>382829085

This is an example of one of the things that COULD be done with membrane keyboards just fine. It has nothing to do with the switch, everything to do with the circuitry of the PCB.
>>
>>382825770
I'm not saying they /can't/ game, I'm saying there's no reason to go out and buy one expressly /for/ gaming, because they provide zero benefit.
Some mechanical keyboards are even a hindrance, if you play a game that requires frequent double-tapping.

Depends on the game.

If you play games that require certain inputs or are fast-paced. I'd say no, keys for me are harder to hit so I eventually just got a cheap keyboard and sure it wears out quickly but it's more comfortable.

If you don't play those kind of action games where you need to input frameperfect stuff, absolutely.

I bought a corsair k65 red switch keyboard for like 40 dollars. It feels really good, I've used many mechanical keyboards before but I like this one the best.

I think they are worth it. They obviously dont help much with your "performance" but they feel really nice. Simply doing anything with your mech keyboard is enjoyable. Some are very loud which gets annoying after a while but there are silent ones as well and you don't have to spend a lot to get a satisfying product.

>>
>>382828661
what the other guy said, it should be better for everything that you've said.
>>
>>382829531
Is it evident? From my understanding gaming mechanical keyboards are typically more expensive than they should be and they have faux switches. If it was cheaper then they would be reasonable. Also I've heard generally speaking the build qualities are terrible but I'm not too sure if that is correct.
>>
>>382835042

I like blues, good for typing and they sound/feel nice. I've heard reds are nice too, but you have to put in more effort if you want to type, which perhaps could get annoying if you're tired. I've never used reds though. Blacks seem like they wouldn't be ideal for typing. I wouldn't recommend any other switch, except maybe Green (which I think is a variant of Red).

If you're writing a lot, it's a delight. But if it's just for gaming, meh I don't know, it might be a bit comfier but clearly not a game changer. The good thing is that they are generally pretty robust.

I like mechanical keyboards because they make those clicking sounds and pressing the buttons feels more pleasing because the buttons are popped out as compared to rubber domes.
>>
>>382837910
They’re really nice to use if you type like 100+wpm. If you’re slow as fuck anyway you won’t appreciate the difference.
>>
>>382837973
Red Gateron here, there is a certain threshold of deliberation that a keystroke requires, while it won't make you a better gamer if you play with a non-clicky linear you're going to be way more deliberate with every keystroke you make, theoretically this will produce higher efficiency and fewer mistakes. With that said it's all about user ability anyways, but depending on the switch it will instill certain habits.
>>
i really don't like clicky/tactile switches for gaming cause once the switch actuates you have to let it come all the way back up and un-click before you can press it again and have the keyboard actually register it as a second keystroke.
