AMD is getting close to being able to coast with Linux open-source drivers out of the box. Nvidia is still horrible though with Nouveau support. Unfortunately, installing any proprietary drivers requires arcane dependencies requirements and older versions of Linux, most importantly, which sucks.

You can grab an iso that is the basics of the system, the default packages if you will. The Debian one, for instance is like 800MB. When you install it, it'll get the latest updates so you don't need to carry around all the updates on your 4GB drive.
