When emerald nightmare mythic was cleared in like 3 days there was a lot of shitposting how raiding in WoW is dead.
Of course the people shitposting on /v/ dont consider that only a few % even among the mythic raiding guilds are high end like that and for the overhwelming majority of mythic raiding guilds the raids are being progressed for far longer than the first guild killing the end boss

What killed WoW in my eyes is how there's no more surprises. Everything is spoilered months in advance by the public test realms by people in-game on retail and outside the game on forums and shit.

Even the way it is designed now, Mortal Strike got a 30(THIRTY)% nerf in pvp because all warriors specs are built with so many multipliers that they were guaranteed kills. Believe it or not Focused Rage Arms was for me the most fun, rewarding and skill intensive spec at its peak during EN.
Precise management of rage and stacks, higher APM than almost all other DPS, and the sheer fun of just button mashing hard during battle cry that happened almost every 30 seconds due to anger management.

Pic related is the census data from right now.
It's not perfect but it's as close as we can get since they stopped releasing sub numbers in late WoD.
It's counting 1.6m characters (NOT accounts) across NA and EU servers. This is a small uptick from 1.5m a few weeks ago, but presumably way way down from Legion launch considering that the last official sub number was 5.6m and Legion surely at least had a month long surge.
If trends are any indication, this number should drop again in about a month and it would not be surprising to see sub 1m before Legion is done.

Again, this number isn't 100% accurate as not only is it characters and not accounts, but some servers don't have enough data to make reporting meaningful (which is a bad sign as well but still worth mentioning).
It IS however considered a great way to identify trends, the trend obviously being that they've been bleeding subs like crazy since 30days after Legion launch.

Yeah, I'm not arguing for or against profits. They're still making cash and a good portion of the people still playing are the players that don't unsub no matter what (in addition to purchasing pets/mounts/etc).
But it's striking how far the subs have fallen in a relatively short amount of time. WoD had a big dropoff as well - as well as a nice steep increase in the beginning. But Legion had a much smaller increase and a steeper decline compared to WoD.

I have no idea how much they're still making but I'd assume a fuckload, just pointing out what we can verify at least somewhat.

That doesn't disprove anything (you can literally go to the same site I went to, btw). That's in the last MONTH, and when that was posted the census report aligned with that pretty closely.
They were at around 2m not that long ago, then a fast drop down to 1.5m, then back to 1.6m.

Since the census can't be totally accurate for a lot of reasons, I'd be curious where mmo champ gets the 1.9 number. But I'd be inclined to go with what they say over the census while using the census to evaluate trends.

That website uses a pretty outdated way of obtaining population and active accounts. It basis all it's data on people using the mod and interacting with the world.

This uses the actual blizzard api and armory so that inactive accounts don't display.
