They're completely unnecessary, especially extremely super ultra realistic graphics, which should ONLY be in VR Simulations, NOT in video games.

Some of them do, as was the case with the Evil Within, MGSV (well the entire series), Yakuza, Ace Combat, Souls, Tekken, and to some extent FFXV. The west typically uses realistic styles because that's all they're taught, while in Japan was taught to be more abstract. They are also technologically behind the west, so they have to rely on more abstract designs and art direction, and it wasn't until recently that the Japanese are starting to use modern engines like UE4. Even so, they still use their normal art directions with a modern engine, which often can look stellar such as Arcsys' fighters and Compiler's new UE4 Neptunia.

Also the Japanese typically make games for the Japanese first, and the Japanese tend to like more abstract, "Japanese" looking games than realistic ones, much like how the west tends to like more realistic looking games.
