The fuck were they thinking when making these early tomb raider games?
You could spend weeks trying to figure out how to get past just one level, not to mention the fuckload of secret tunnels and movable blocks that you literally can't identify unless you happen to push/pull it.
Why did they make it so difficult to play? Was it genius at work, or just sado-masochism?

Wow, sounds like you're raiding tombs or something.

You could run, jump, climb, swim, jump sideways, grab on to ledges, crawl, jump backwards, push and pull walls, etc. The game assumed you could do all these things while playing and fitted the levels around these mechanisms. The control mechanisms in these games were ahead of their time, that's all.

I remember playing the first level on tomb raider 3 as a kid, never ever got past it. Never really managed to complete any of the levels either. I'd use up all my ammo trying to kill the monkeys and tigers, then eventually fall to my death, or get raped by a monkey. It had a strange atmosphere to it, scary at times. Got a cheat code to skip levels? Great, now you get to die by rolling boulders in a later level.
>>382774929
They overkilled the difficulty level in Tomb Raider 3 because people were complaining 1 & 2 were too easy.
I personally hate Tomb Raider 3 because the majority of levels are boring as fuck and are filled with cheap ass death traps and dark hidden pathways to confuse the living fuck out of the average player.
those fucking dart traps fucking shit this game pissed me off
>>382775281
You can imagine the butthurt and tears if TB3 were to be re-released today with improved graphics. They would call it the dark souls of adventure games.
>jump down a hole you're supposed to go down
>spikes at the bottom
>instant death
WOOOW
>>382776224
>run into spikes and die
>you can go through them if you walk
HOW WAS I SUPPOSED TO KNOW THAT? THE GAME NEVER TELLS YOU YOU CAN DO THAT WHAT THE FUCK MAN
>tfw you always trapped Lara's creepy ass butler in her huge freezer. He freaked me out when I was a kid desu

Embarrassing

Your pistols have unlimited ammunition...
>>382776102
>instant kill boulder traps
>spikes
>quicksand
>rooms where the doors lock and the ceiling or walls will crush you
>poisonous snakes that hide in the grass
>monkeys that steal your items
>piranhas that kill you if you fall in the water
>river currents that drag you back to the start of the level if the piranhas don't get you
and this is just the first level!
>>382777141
We are all millenials you fucking idiot.
Stop this dumb meme.
>>382778084
t. Millenial faggot
>>382776882
GET OUT AND CLOSE THE DOOR! QUICK!
>>382774929
Agree, I would never find some secrets without a guide. tr3 also introduced multiple ways for finishing some levels, so you'll probably miss some secrets altogether.

>>382775728i can only hope that this is bait.I've played all tomb Raiders as a kid, found them fun and not confusing. Everything was visible, required some experimentation though.

It would be legit hard with limited saves.
>>382778292
said one millenial faggot to the other
>>382779229
the console version had saves tied to limited use items that were usually hidden in secret areas
Let's play tomb raider by DSP when?
>>382780003
Yes, save crystals, I meant them.

NANDEFUCK!?????
Think of a PS1 game not called Castlevania.
Got it? Good.
The game you're thinking of sucks.
There was a time when people actually played the videogames they had, when storage space was limited and people didn't have a collection of literally hundreds of games that just sat around.
He probably didn't play it for hours every day, for months, until he figured it out. My guess is that he tried some things out and eventually had an epiphany or something like that.
But yeah, people used to replay their games. Of course with AAA shovelware, that doesn't happen.
>>382780421
A few moments*
>>382780605
Spiderman does NOT suck.
>>382780092
I don't know why the series didn't just have fixed position save crystals that you could save at unlimited number of times. That would fix most of the problems with it.
>>382780660
yes except he said moments
also everyone had a modchipped ps1
I had literally 100s of ps1 games to go through
>>382781228
Oh alright. I guess I was projecting a little bit, I spent 5 years cycling through Jedi Outcast, POP:WW and GTA SA for example, played each of those around 10 times. I did play some other games on the side occasionally.
>>382780605
There are a crap ton of great games on ps1 you dork
The first four Tomb Raider games are great, come on
TR3 is hard as fuck, yeah, but 1 and 2 are easy, and 4 is pretty balanced.
I just love these games, they're challenging, the atmosphere is great, it can be comfy, scary, mysterious, it has a great sense of adventure.
Gameplay is super rewarding once you're familiar with it, level design is pretty great too
I grew up watching my dad play these games, playing the tutorial and never being able to go past the first levels. Once I was able to finish them it was the best feeling ever.
God I love Tomb Raider
>>382774929
you can identify them though
>>382774929
Played all of them at release.
Nothing hard like you try to portrait.
Is this hipster behaviour? What are you trying to achieve?
>>382776361
tell me the problem in reloading the game
>>382783732
(you)
leave it to /v/ to defend one of the worst tomb raider games
>>382784626
Pray tell, which is the best Tomb Raider game?
>>382785016
either 2 or anniversary
>>382785187
>anniversary
>>382785252
yeah i said that
>>382785478
You'd best have Chronicles autocorrect to anniversary or you're in trouble, boy.
>>382780421
>light a flare

>>382785542
>Chronicles
uhh you said what the best tomb raider game was not that the worst ;)
>>382785679
>that post
>>382785746
yes its a post
>>382785779
Are you a researcher? Because that post reads like it was typed by a drunk monkey.
>>382785925
not an argument ;)
>>382786048
The grammar in your post suggested that you aren't aware of what you posted in the first place, much less that there was an argument somewhere in that jumbled mess of a sentence. I would expect nothing else from someone who doesn't consider TR 3 the pinnacle of the series, closely followed by 1.
>>382786159
tomb raider 3 is gay as fuck, kys! no one likes that shit game
>>382786225
Thank you for further demonstrating your lack of an ability to use your brain.

I don't understand how people could get past the shitty controls. Its unbearable with a controller but people have the nerve to suggest the PC versions so imagine shitty controls with a fucking keyboard. Jesus christ
>started TR1
>you can completely miss A FUCKING WEAPON just because you skipped a single corner
Really triggers my OCD.
>>382786739
I never could. 15 years ago or whatever playing TRII I'd spend hours on the first level.
Tried it again recently, nothing has changed. Still can't climb those rocks.
>>382786739
It actually controls pretty nice using a keyboard, you are just bad
These twenty year old games have better atmosphere, soundwise, than many modern ones.

>>382776361
You knew that since Prince of Persia
Is Anniversary a remake of 1? How dumbed down is it?
>>382774929
god damn dude
how old are you
The only thing I remember about Tomb Raider is doing sick gymnastics in Lara's mansion and getting mauled to death by dinosaurs (or wolves).
>>382775721
I remember that the cheat to skip the level included you a full turn 3 times and then jumping forward.
>>382788609
light a flare, step forward, step backwards, turn 3 times and then jump forward to skip level or backwards for infinite weapons
do that without the flare to explode
