Yeah, they confirmed that in one of the treehouse streams, Mario leapt right off a high building and hit the ground, other than getting stunned with an amusing little animation, WHOOPING TEN VITALITY he was fine.

Really I'm fine with it, he only has 3 HP and really you could cancel fall damage pretty easily in SM64 and Sunshine.

I've avoided looking anything other than screenshots and the E3 trailer.

Discovering all the movement options and playing around was one of the best parts of Mario 64, that I didn't appreciate until long after.

It's because they targeted 60fps. As a business decision it's probably sound since nobody expects anything graphically dazzling from nintendo these days and they get meme points for the high framerate, but I really don't think it's that important for a platformer. IIRC the only prior Mario game at 60 was 3D World.

Fall damage only really ever existed as a sense of pacing.To prevent someone jumping from the top of Tall Tall Mountain in Mario 64 to the bottom.

Mario Odyssey has much more movement options with the hat gimmick so no need to slow pacing with fall damage.
