Started playing XIV again, and I'm getting bored after a week. PvP is even more fucked than it was before and PvE is the same shit, only super staggered.

Not really. The game is really fast. Especially in endgame. You only really use <10 GCD skills and the rest of your hotbars are oGCD and more often than not you use 2 each 2.5 seconds, so in 3 GCD, which is around 7.5secs, you end up using around 9 skills. And considering each fight is around 5-8 minutes long you start to realize how fast combat really is.

Well for one, XIV has traditionally had zero gear checks. Not even Gordias itself was a serious check once you get down to it, a4s involving multiple player sacs, a3s cleared in 1 week. So there is a veritable challenge to beating XIV raids.

2ndly, if you can't see that people enjoy challenging content when its relevant then examine why you play any video game ever. Hurr in 1 patch all your gear will be acquired easily. So what, my enjoyment was playing through the expac with my static and doing new content and watching cutscenes. If people want to play FFXIV "optimally" then it's no skin off my back. If you wanna bitch about gear being useless 3 months later, then don't play. Simple as that, until the mythical grass child MMO of horizontal progression comes along again.

Yes the game starts far too slow and holds your hand too much for far too long. But when it gets good, it gets good. The only "slow" job at max level is Black Mage, which remains a caster slowly casting powerful spells. The other two casters have much, much faster and more active gameplay. Red Mage can follow up any spell with an instant cast of any other spell, and Summoner gets a shit ton of abilities that aren't tied to the slow GCD, so you often have to cast three different spells for one GCD.

That's more of a euphemism saying that most people just accepted it by that point. I currently play both games (FFXIV from Heavensward onwards) and it's still jarring to me how much slower the combat is every time I switch between them unless I'm playing monk.

Not an issue at endgame. Dunno what to tell you, there are plenty of WoWvets in XIV and literally no one complains about aoe markers or gcd. AoE in XIV checks for damage usually when the cast finishes, not when the animation happens. Yes it may be jarring when you switch from WoW to FFXIV but in general FFXIV is designed around the gcd in terms of off-gcds as well as how fights are designed.

Legion plays competently but it's just so mechanical and soulless. It's just a boring chore to play, and by all means it shouldn't be. The zones are interesting and creative, the dungeons are well made, the soundtrack is good. So why is it so fucking boring?

Maybe because the main form of outdoor content is D3-style "go here and fill up a bar" gameplay and all classes have the same 'build up resource, spend resource' gameplay but with different particle effects.

I like FFXIV. I started the free trail recently and it's pretty fun. I was never into MMOs and I never played WoW past it's free trail. Pugilist is fast paced and fun, but getting into dungeons is a bitch. Who thought that having way more DPS classes than tanks/healers was a good idea?

Long, Progression based character building: Something WOW hasn't had in a long, long time, as it is not considered a core priority by the modern WOW dev team, Watcher himself said in an interview "we thought we solved the leveling problem with character boosts" as well, you can see the trend in raid design and the complete absense of significant character progression in such a system, and nu-WOW talents are more akin to COD perks, rather then points you can use to tailor your character to your playstyle, and min-max in various ways for various things, forced cookie cutter killed class mastery, so you've essentially get boosted to end game, grind for 8 hours, and are now being funneled into a pointless end game grind that gets reset every 3-6 months (12 if its the last patch of the expansion, and at that point even top end best in slot becomes vendor trash in less then 20 minutes)

It's more than FFXIV is one of the few MMOs to rigidly take to a combo system. This naturally plays into efficiency in terms of gcds where there can be a tremendous amount of gcd waste even with good players. It's not like WoW where you tab over and continue what you were doing because your entire moveset is segregated.

Titan was weird, the puddles did have a castbar but the damage wasn't dealt at the end of the cast. There was a small gap you could move after the cast finished and avoid damage but it wasn't often this would happen normally. The reason probably ties into the cast cancelling issue because FFXIV checks your players position maybe every 150-200 MS. So you COULD avoid a titan puddle or whatever other AOE circle but it means if you want to do it by just moving it will only work when the position check lines up right before getting hit. This can be alleviated by mashing a spell because the game will force check your position when you cast in order to prevent you from casting while moving. It's also why when you cancel a spell into another spell provided you are mashing the key fast enough the spell will start casting slightly earlier than when the cast bar actually appears on the screen.

Having played FFXIV for some 3 years now, its biggest problem by far is the utter lack of horizontal progression. Levels are everything. And when you're at max, item levels are everything. This applies to combat jobs as well as crafting and gathering. Once you're at the top, you will grind to get your item levels go higher.

Luckily the story content is top-notch for an MMO though, so once every 3 months or so you'll get something new and exciting to look forward to.

I have joined a GC. I'm on the Twin Adder one but when I queue for this Frontline shit I always get put on either the Twin Adder team or Immortal Flames but never Maelstrom.

Basically, you want all your usual cds and two Clean Shots, two Cooldowns at least in every wildfire. Yes you need to get used to how annoying Flamethrower feels. Overheat is always a dps loss unless you have barrel stabilizer which you use in your opener, meaning you won't use Overheat until 3rd/5th/7th and so on wildfires.

This may all change in 4.01
