This is why I love games like Crash Bandicoot because it doesn't focus on graphics or gameplay, but rather the music and an enjoyable and engaging plot.

CB's gameplay wasn't super smooth and the graphics for the time wasn't as great as SM64, MGS, and other big titles. But the game is pleasantly memorable for me.

Do you? If so then you must be underage because there's no denying that a large portion of Morrowind's and Oblivion's initial sales were driven by graphics. If you look at old posts and reviews, you'll find no shortage of complaints that they were actually shit and only good for eye candy. One of my favorites is this because if you blocked the name then you probably couldn't tell what TES game this was meant for:

I have over 100 hours in the game, I'm the Grandmaster of a House, the master of every guild, and it matters not. The game lacks a mental challenge of any kind. Not once was I ever lost, confused or perplexed as to how to escape - there was never anything to escape. Where are the mazes, traps and puzzles found in games like Ultima IX and Baldur's Gate 2? The closest thing to a puzzle in the game is wandering aimlessly looking for hidden doors in the wilderness because of poor directions given by NPCs. Which brings me to another point. The NPCs in the game have no substance at all. They all say the same things, they have no depth and they use two voices (male/female) for each race. Very bland. The storyline is not even remotely engaging. There's no one to love, hate or mistrust, including your own character. It looks so good, I tried everything I could to "immerse" myself in the game (as so many have described this game as immersive) - this game is anything but immersive. In spite of its non-linear play, which is a plus, the game is incredibly boring to play once you stop drooling at the graphics.

In both Morrowind and Oblivion the people (especially faces) were inexcusably ugly, but the worlds were graphically stunning. Regardless of whether you personally think so, the fact is that if you were - on their respective release dates - to have complained that their graphics were bad or even mediocre you'd have been laughed out of any discussion.

That said, regardless of what you or anyone else thinks about how good or bad they look, the fact that Bethesda was TRYING to make them as graphically impressive as they could is what's important for this thread where you're basically deciding the game's budget. In Morrowind's case:

Okay that's kind of cheating because it got downgraded after this preview and lost the dynamic lighting and shadows, but still if you look at any review or forum thread of Morrowind from 2002 or Oblivion from 2006 you'll find a ton of praise for their graphics, moreso than any other single aspect of the games except maybe their size, and regardless of whether the person praising them actually liked the games as a whole or were critical.
