I don't get why Blizzard thought it was a good idea to use random letters from the skill names' as the hotkey, instead of the now common string of keys.

Imagine in a normal shooter instead of using [1], [2], [3], etc to select different weapons you had to press random letters. [I] for the knIfe, [E] for the rEvolver, [U] for the shotgUn, etc.

they are not random. They are letters on your left-side of keyboards. Blizzard think it's probably it's easier to memorize with letter from the skill's name and in rts 1,2 3 are used to group up units.

What are Merc Camps, in dota the jungle creeps can be pulled to the lane at a certain time in order to get your creeps to attack them stopping the enemy getting exp. There is also heroes and items that allow you to get jungle camps to fight for you, is it similar to these anon?

1, 2, 3 were just examples. It could have been z, x, c, v for example. Groupings are also used in mobas.

DotA does talents right, though. HotS talents are really fucking boring and serve as a minor replacement mechanic for all the other shit stripped out of the game, whereas DotA talents mesh into the game by being broken as fuck and batshit insane at times.

It's basically summoning unique creeps with certain ability after you clear the specific spot of jungle. It has a lot longer timer than normal jungle respawn time of dota2.

Think of enchantress with its seduce but instead every hero can take control of unique units one time(until the next respawn) after they clear the specific jungle spot.
