I'm not gonna fuck around and pretend this is indicative worldwide I work at EB Games and we actually ran out of our initial shipment on Saturday (which was about 400 copies, already a bit more than the average game ships to us). That included instore preorders though.

But it's not just us, other stores in our network have also sold out, and my manager told me country wide there is a shortage, at least at EB anyway.

Second shipment is expected Thursday and it's as big as initial shipment, and we've already sold about 30% of it from backorders since the first sold out.

I doubt it if they have to go through a process like this one. By which I mean, if they lost much of the source code and had to carefully recreate a lot of the original from scratch. That's a fair amount of work so it takes a relatively major title like Crash to justify it. I say "relative" because obviously it's still a tiny fraction of the cost of actually making a new game, they sell a few million copies here and they're more then happy, game paid for itself a while ago. But the work they put in wouldn't pay for itself on 10k copies either.

On the other hand if they actually have more assets from other games then they could remaster a lot more easily, then we might see more. Wouldn't be a bad thing either, a lot of great PS1 games that modern gamers won't ever play otherwise. Improvements to PS1 without access to code/remaster is hard too unlike PS2, because PS1 was so early on and had an odd genesis that it lacked a lot of core basics like a z-buffer.

The problem though is that devs from that era threw everything away A LOT. In the US and Japan. Sometimes if you're lucky they'd "only" be thrown in some moldy janitor's closet rather then immediately wiped and reused. But I suspect "got rid of everything" is more then rule then the exception so for a lot of vidya from that era we will never see a remaster short of near-full recreation.
