i dont find his videos that entertaining and the writing/structure is eh.
i dont leave his videos having learnt something; he merely "reviews" the game more in-depth as opposed to critique. well, at least, thats my opinion

also his voice is really fucking annoying. he sound like a bitch.

>>
>>382646246
I enjoyed his Zelda review and his The Witness video but his recent 'update' video made me unsubscribe. He goes on how he's so much above 10 minute videos youtubers because he can't into actually making a point in less than an hour. Then he goes on how he needs at least 800 hours for Witcher videos because he needs to actually play them first. How about you first play a game and then decide if you have anything interesting to add to the conversation or even want to play the game a second time. But no he plays 300 hours of the witcher games because that's what might get clicks, goes well on reddit and gets new Patreons. Also he made 2 (TWO) Fallout 4 video of >1 hour length and stated that he's never played FO1 or 2 and states 'he probably never will'. This shows absolute disrespect not only to the series but also to video game history as a whole. He's not interested in any of that though, FO4 was hyped as fuck, he liked New Vegas and knew this was going to flop so he made a video about it and a second one one year later and probably spent 500 hours on it in which he could have completed FO1/2 100 times.

Because the channels who talk about Dark Souls or the Witcher or Zelda are the ones that get support and attention. That's why they get talking about on here and someone who does the exact same thing but talks about smaller games doesn't get noticed or any support. Dude talked about video games for a couple hours now is raking in all those patreon bucks, meanwhile a smaller channel doesn't even show up on the search results. It's all a money game.

That's not what makes me feel conflicted.

Is more like, I'm cool with people pursuing their dreams. I admire when someone leaves everything behind and try to focus on what they like and try to make a living out of it.
On the other hand, I realize that person has a family, people that depends on him.
I put myself on the shoes of his wife, arriving at home and seeing your husband in front of the computer all day long, playing or writing...
Having family or friends meetings and your husband goes with the teens to talk about vidya and stuff ...

I'm not differen right now, I guess, but I'm free, I can fail and I won't drag anyone with me.

Fuck off retard. It's not unknown but outside of memes and /tg/ Warhammer is not popular. Their most recent games to have come out have failed miserably and that text to speech video is the most popular warhammer channel. Witcher 3, CoD, fallout, Skyrim, and Hearthstone are popular. Warhammer doesn't hold a candle to them. You have a very weird definition of what "popular" is.

Joseph Anderson is kind of funny.

His review structure is a lot like Doug Walkers, which is actually terrible. He goes through the main story beat by beat, which for a game like SOMA, basically ruins it.

His analysis is often long winded for the sake of it. Look at his analysis of Shrines in his breath of the wild review as evidence of this. Way too long for it's own good.

>>
>>382650013
its not that he "needs" 3500 a month -- his fans merely want to support him; i just think he doesnt deserve it.
>>
>>382649405
In order to be concise you need to understand the subject matter. If you want to analyse BotW you should identify the overall design philosophy that shaped the game, and then examine each aspect of the gameplay to see how they tie into that philosophy and each other, then see what changed from previous titles and why. Shouldn't take you more than 15-30 minutes. Mark Brown did a good job at it.
Anderson is a """""self-published""""" fantasy author, he has no idea how games work. That leaves him just picking apart every individual part of the game in needless detail without reaching any meaningful insight.
>>

I totally agree with you. Most of Joseph's videos could be cut down to 50% of the length, with no detriment.

This is why when he says he's terrible at estimates, and things end up being twice as long as necessary is laughable to me.

His outside review was 24 minutes, for a game that's roughly 2 and a half hours.

That's fucking excessive.
>>
>>382650013

Okay I'll try a more detailed response. The truth the quote hints at is that it is easier to dismantle the working parts of something and analyze how they work than it is to assemble something from raw materials. The two processes might not even be the same.

Imagine the wine critic, talking about how a wine's quality is determined by things like its finish and flavors. The critic can explain ('teach') the qualities of a good wine simply from digesting the product.

Does that tell you fuck all about how to grow grapes and manage a vineyard and ferment the wine and so on? No, creation is inherently a different skillset from critiquing.

Another truth the quote hints at is that anyone can learn the basics and the established techniques, but true excellence requires a spark of creative genius that can't be taught. But if you fail to be a genius, you can fall back on transmitting those skills you learned to the next crop of amateurs. I've seen this with writers in my personal life, many who can't 'make it' professionally get MFAs to become teachers.

3500 is around average (still a little low actually) for a single Canadian income. But for an average Canadian family average income is around 78 thousand a year. Depending on what his wife makes he might not be hitting that mark. And even if he is hitting the average I still don't see why that should count as impressive.

Editing your own writing is the most boring, soul-sucking task of all time.
If you don't do it, you end up with Anderson's videos, too long and overly repetitive.
If you do it too much you'll end up with months of down time staying awake at night trying to rewrite a sentence for the 12,000th time and it's still never perfect and no one will ever notice but you will damn it why don't I just kill myself right fucking now, aka Matosis.

I honestly agree with this guy.

The shrines were micro-dungeons. Just a quick thing to get a heart peice. They were meant as a way to reward exploration and provide fast travel points in a fairly elegant way. They're short and sweet.

The issue with the Shrines, is that they're meant to supplement a bigger dungeon. Breath of the WIld doesn't have bigger dungeons.

Breath of the Wild is a game about exploring a vast open world, not slogging your way through 2 hours of interconnected puzzle rooms. Dungeons are an outdated relic. Everything of value has been stripped out and better integrated into the open world experience.

I eagerly want him to review Witcher games even though we will see W3 video probably in 2018. At least his shit will be balanced, the only youtube reviews I can find are overpraised almost shilling tier "reviews" where everything but the story quest parts are ignored or some unintelligible rants, where people can't even properly explain what they don't like about the game and it seems that the games existence is a threat to their livelihood or something.

I agree. Fence sitters like Boogie are boring.

That being said theres a time and place. If you're going to criticize games, I don't care about your political alignments. What your "opinions" should be are opinions on the genre, for instance.

>JRPG comes out

That's how it should be.

I think it would color what he would make of developer intent. Intent would change the meaning of the game itself. Just look at how people on /v/ receive games that they judge to be made by "SJWS". They ignore positive aspects of the story and mechanics to laser focus on the bad. It's usually not even intentional most of the time. But it happens. Now I'm not saying Noah is that bad but the stronger your beliefs the greater the biases.

Maybe instead of releasing a video asking for more money and time he could learn to slim down his scripts and videos instead. I like the guy, but Jesus, you don't have to make hour long videos to go into depth for a game review or analysis.

You described the majority of people as if this is some sort of revelation.
>to the astounding conclusion that fallout 4 isnt well written, or that dark souls is not the best game in the world
You don't understand. What you're doing here is much akin to criticism the band Boris gets for their early albums, that they're rudimentary in their guitar playing, that anyone could play this kind of music why is it so damn popular? It's not that the 30 minutes-two hour long analyses are breaking any amazing ground or coming to profound revelations. It's that somebody took the time to analyze something they enjoy or dislike to this length, so people want to watch it. These men enjoy video games enough to put this much time into discussing it, so people who enjoy video games come and congregate. It's unique. It's far more interesting than the bite sized three-10 minute review of the late 90s and throughout the 2000s which were often misleading. See: IGN, Gamespot, ugo, 1up, etc.

Lol what. Teens and kids like hiking much like adults. Teens and kids like partying much like adults with varying degrees of sex involved. The only differences between teens and adults is that teenagers don't pay taxes. Everybody likes the same beer, the same tv shows, the same movies, the same music, the same books, the same video games, the same hobbies. Stop this dated concept of adulthood you have.
