If the qunari believe that a farmer can never be a merchant, but only a farmer-turned-merchant, it seems highly unlikely that they would understand someone like Krem. So now we have a problem. Either Sten is a moron or The Iron Bull is a liar. We do know that The Iron Bull's title is Hissrad, which translates into liar, so the logical thing to do is assume he is lying to everyone. Perhaps he is manipulating Krem or maybe he's just spreading propaganda in order to make the Qun seem less of a threat. This seems unlikely since he will talk about how several of the people in the Inquisition would do badly under the Qun, so instead we are left with the more likely scenario that BioWare has damaged a carefully crafted belief system in exchange for a cheap joke with Cassandra.

Instead of softening the Qun by creating this Aqun-athlok concept, the writers should have kept the previous vision for the qunari intact and used the Qun's intolerance as a wedge between The Iron Bull and his loyalty to the Qun. There already is a line of dialogue in which The Iron Bull admits the Qun isn't perfect, and he talks about losing his desire to follow his assigned role when in Seheron. Sten's actions in Lothering would have been an example of the dangers of the rigidity of the current system. Everything would have fit together. The Iron Bull could have had some moral and philosophical dilemma's to overcome. As it stands now, The Iron Bull is just a poor man's Oghren.

I just couldn't take The Iron Bull's character seriously in Inquisition. Everything he says comes across as a bad joke. The Iron Bull makes the tamassrans sound like part of a free loving hippie commune, instead of an integral part of an intensely restrictive society. According to The Iron Bull, the Tamassrans "help you figure out what you should do" and "there are tamassrans who pop your cork whenever you need it". There is no hint of reverence in The Iron Bull's dialgue, unlike this next example from Sten.

All things considered, it appears that The Iron Bull was just poorly written. His character doesn't fit with the qunari society described in previous games, and he just doesn't strike me as a believable character.

If I ever do a second playthrough of Inquisition, I will be certain to turn the chargers away, because The Iron Bull adds nothing but cheap low brow comedy to the game. We already have Sera for that, and she doesn't damage one the most important and interesting creations of the Dragon Age universe.

If anyone is wondering why these conflicts bother me so much, it is because it changes the overall dynamic between Ferelden and the qunari. The History of Ferelden: Chapter 2 (http://dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Codex_entry:_History_of_Ferelden:_Chapter_2) specifically states how important freedom is to the people of Ferelden when talking about the Orlesian occupation. "Our people, who from time immemorial valued their freedom over all else, were forced to bow to Orlesian rule." This makes the qunari the perfect villains. Their belief that person freedoms and values are irrelevant make it the exact opposite to what the Fereldens believe. Plus, the strict society and stern no-nonsense subjects of the Qun make for a much more believable threat than the decadent Orlesians. The qunari were not evil, they were different. That is far more terrifying. The Iron Bull erodes the differences between the civilizations, and they become less terrifying. Just look at Krem's quote: "Maybe your people aren't so bad after all."

Anyway, that's all I have to say about that. If you are thinking of replaying Dragon Age: Origins anytime soon, I recommend you drag Sten along with you the first time you visit a new area. This will often open up new dialogs that would otherwise never be seen. Many of them can be quite interesting, and help understand the reasoning of the Qun. I also found his dry wit to be quite amusing. There was this one line that really cracked me up when talking about mages after taking him to the Circle the first time.

All I could think of was how wonderful it would have been to have him in Inquisition. I would have put him in a party with Vivienne and The Iron Bull. Sten would have verbally eviscerated both of them. Then he probably would have literally eviscerated both of them. And it would have been glorious.

Spoilers for this 8 year old game: Defeating the final boss permanently requires the death of a Grey Warden (I.E. you or Alistair, or another character if you're a fucking faggot and trade them for Alistair during the game.) The problem is that in theory, having an Old God still be alive vs. dead should be a BIG FUCKING DEAL, but it's not like they're gonna make 2 different games based on which you picked.

The problem with games that have both "big choices" AND sequels is that incorporating those "big choices" into the sequel requires work they are almost never willing/able/have the money or time to do.

But, because Bioware are fucking retards, they couldn't figure out how to properly model long hair in Frostbite, so no characters have it in Inquisition.
