Literally depends on what you want. Hollow Knight is a great metroidvania where you can easily sink 35 hours into a 100% run. Ori is more visually pleasing and is a bit more about platforming than hollow knight, also shorter.
Nu-DOOM is alright if you want to fuck shit up in an fps.

Give it another go, if you feel like you're not doing good then ask for advice in some xcom threads, maybe go to a general on /vg/ if they have one. Some quick tips I'd give are that grenades can't miss and destroy cover, use them liberally and get satellites up quick. Getting the money rolling early is important.
Darkest dungeon is a nice dungeon crawler with great narration and a beautiful aesthetic. It's RNG can be pretty unforgiving so you NEED to know how to bend the numbers in your favor if you want to come out on top. If you can't handle losing a character or being forced to abandon a quest because it would go to shit, it's not the game for you. Also dumping some of your characters if they get really bad quirks which aren't worth curing because of a lack of positives is common.
Basically, you should treat them as rookies in xcom, disposable.

Have you played any other Tales? It's a good first one. The game itself I'd recommend but I remember hearing the port was messy. Apparently there's a community fix that patches the problems it had, don't know if that changed the framerate which was originally 30 on the PC. Anyway I played the original on the gamecube and loved it. You could always try it and you'd know if it ran well enough within 2 hours to consider a refund.

Basically whichever modern one has a setting you find most interesting. I personally like Shogun 2, but it's a little different than standard rock paper scissors total war gameplay, since the vast majority of troops use spears, so it alters the whole balance of sword beats lance beats horse, since horses are rarer, and weaker, while swordsmen are usually more expensive and not always worth it.

I think most people would recommend Atilla, since Rome II triggered a lot of people at launch, but personally I fucking hate the setting so I prefer Rome II. Warhammer is not a good one to start with since it's fantasy.

I've played Shogun 2 and Attila. I'd recommend either based on your preference for a historical setting. Shogun 2 is easy to wrap your head around - when in doubt, build some more ashigaru and try to work those yari walls. Sieges suck in Shogun 2 though, attacking is a little boring unless you don't bring much of any ranged units and defending can be done with a tiny garrison because AI always tries to scale walls and eats a ton of attrition for it. While the different factions aren't so different, there's enough unit variety to give your armies different compositions. And it has good music.

Attila I found cool for being a less-common setting, and factions are much more diverse. They really do seem to play differently if you're playing each optimally. Playing as Rome and trying to hold out is tense but hugely satisfying, the hunnic armies are a fun twist. You have more options on the campaign map too. Cavalry tends to be a bit overpowered though. Which is fine, because you can always use cav too. If you play Western Rome, your Scout Equites should end up with like 400 kills per battle or you probably aren't gonna hold out. Can't jam out to the music.

I played it through it without feeling fucked over. Went for some early points in hacking, and you can get around a lot of obstacles that WOULD require strength to lift objects out of the way by using a recycler charge to remove the obstacles instead. That felt like a good way to conserve skill points. Also went with buffs to normal weapon damage so that limited ammo wasn't as big a deal. Those felt like the most useful decisions to make. Plus there's some good skills to get greater healing from items, never hurts. I think you would fuck yourself over if you invested all your resources into things like faster sprint speed and jump height, stuff that feels nice to have but doesn't actually give you a material benefit. Also: at no point did I ever get a Typhon-style skill. Didn't need one and let's just say that turrets are a much more pleasant sight that way.

It was free on PSN+ last week, but if you like comfy telltale tier adventure/movie games it's one of the better ones available.

Setting is comfy (small Oregon coastal town in highschool) and has a gameplay mechanic that ties into the storyline (though makes your choices meaningless since you can change them right after you make them).

For $5 you can't really go wrong if you like playing these types of games yourself instead of watching people play them on youtube.

I really suspect there are. I played it and while it's a passable game it's nothing compared to other entries in the genre. If you really wanna play a "new" metroidvania, try Hyper Metroid. "Free" and quite high quality.

Well don't get fucking Dishonored 2 first of all. It's probably the most hardware demanding game right now, not because it looks amazing, but because it's a crappy port.

Mankind Divided is equally demanding.

The game itself is amazing, but only buy it when you have a decent PC. Triple A gaming and low-end hardware don't do well together.

I played Trails in the Sky on a shitty laptop, so it's probably the best option if you really enjoy the series. I found it charming but a little lackluster.
