Shotguns that scale enemy kickback by pelts hit are amazing, you can get some easy fall damage kills If you crouch and fire upwards on enemies. Lava, acid, acid slime, bridges, crushers, drills, etc; there are many drops spots in Quake2 that made the SS fun to use.

Something about the weapons in Quake 2, and to a much lesser extend Quake 1 feel hollow. It's hard to explain, but compared to Doom or Duke Nukem or the original Half Life, weapons don't have an oomph behind them.
Gonna sound game theory bullshit but in other shooters there's a way that the audio, input, and on screen result that just clicks.

Quake 2 has some of the most satisfying guns IMO, and I really don't like Q1 weapons.

The biggest problem with Q2 guns is the lack of low-HP enemies. You just don't get a lot of one-shots even with railgun. Also RL fucking sucks. Hyperblaster and chaingun are amazing, though.

Bungie shotguns are notorious when it comes to the whole "shotgun is absolutely useless past 5 feet" thing. They're savage up close though, I'll give you that.

Q1 feels hollow to you because you take the standart shotgun as an actual shotgun instead of the game's pistol, and the super shotgun as the D2 equivalent instead of the game's regular shotgun.
My guess on why it's this way was to amp up the enemies as "they're so tough you'll need a shotgun to start with"

Every enemy in Quake 2 takes a good amount of shots to kill and that kills it.

I think the reason why enemies in Q1 more spongy is simple, they couldn't afford to have Doom enemy counts in a fully 3D game.

Reviving like that is only something that happens if you don't kill a downed played in one of the MP modes iirc Instead of just falling over like in Mortal Kombat, a "killed" player will revive instead.
I forgot the exact causes and I'm just going off memory. Take it with a massive grain of salt.
