I play it still because I know 5 other people that like to play. So I can have a 3-6 stack of people and have fun while playing.

I'm not a hardcore gamer anymore, I have too many responsibilities. I like how I can just hop on a Friday night and not have to worry about shit like guild responsibilities and raids, I can just hop in a game and play a different role. Hell, some characters I can play without the stress of aiming like it's counterstrike. No other game I can think of gives me that experience.

Most people still playing are playing with friends, playing for skins, or playing for money (esports, Twitch). Overwatch can sustain itself mostly on its own popularity now, which is what Blizzard was going for with its marketing campaign since now they can release one of their several planned characters/maps every 6 months to stretch out the game's life as long as possible. In doing so they can sell more loot boxes to more people with little self-control.

The game is fun with friends, but let's be honest so are MOST games. The only reason Overwatch got so big is because of the Blizzard brand, which in my opinion shouldn't have carried so much respect on launch after their other post-Activision shitshows, but that's the media world for your I guess.

I don't take the game very seriously or pay attention to my stats or rankings, but I think I'm in the higher tier of play because I keep seeing players level 300+ making up the enemy team. At that level, all I can say is that Overwatch feels very fomulaic and that "everyone on team press q for final push" is really not doing the design any favors. It's kind of a retarded clusterfuck to watch three ults go off, then have them all completely negated by a Mercy undoing all deaths.

But the ults are a core part of letting bad players feel good.

I also kind of dislike the lack of independence for good players. It's hard to carry a bad team because everything is built around team composition. I remember being in a game and having some guy rant at me to kill the enemy Pharah because I was Soldier, and motherfuckers won't even cover my ass when a Lucio rolls around and shoots me to death at close range. I mean motherfuckers, if you want me pointed towards the sky, then cover me while my FoV is not on the ground. Soldier can take down Pharah, but he needs to focus on it and he does it from mid range where there are dangers. This is not like playing Widowmaker where you clip Pharah's wings from across the field.

It's not the game people hype it up to be. Is it fun? Yeah. But it's fun peppered with bullshit and it has a lot of what I've come to think of as Blizzard's characteristic design flaws.

The answer is polish. Overwatch is impeccably polished, with jankiness ironed out and a ton of little details that work together to give the gameplay serious 'oomph' that a game like Paladins can't hope to match.

What do you mean by "oomph"? It feels like the game is throwing the kitchen sink at you to give you pats on the back for positively everything, but it's all based around defending two choke points per map. I think there's maybe one map in total that's an exception to this.

Otherwise there are tons of really annoying things about the game. Mei - like the entire character of Mei - is a good example. While not an especially powerful team player, one on one she is a massive pain in the ass. At close range she freezes you and you can't really escape it, and if she fucks up she can hide in an ice block and recover all her health. Don't get even get me started on the "hilarity" of when she ice walls her own team in their spawn or accidentally cuts you off in the middle of doing something.

When you say "oomph", do you mean sound effects? The meaningless "play of the game" screen? What?
