Finally decided to play this game after I made 4 my very first Fallout. It's staggering how much better everything is in New Vegas. Granted the gunplay is iffy, but I actually find it more rewarding than it was in 4, that and I like the sheer number of weapon options the game gives you along with the addition of having to maintain your gear.

I'm currently doing a Legion run, or I should I say want to do a Legion run. Decided to side track into one of the DLC; I believe it's called Honest Hearts? It's the one where you're with the traveling caravan that gets slaughtered two minutes in and the more Legion soldier Joshua.

Cassidy and Vic, with honorable mentions to Sullik for 2.
Give Cassidy a gauss rifle and Vic a gauss pistol and they'll be firing twice per round once they're maxed, for crazy damage. Sullik is a dum nigga and charges right into the thick of things, and the .223 pistol doesn't cut it late game.
Can't help but pick up Boone and repair EDE errytime in NV. Have contemplated blowing Veronica up and just doing the BoS quest with a collar. Raul is a pretty cool dude too, one day I'd like to make a lucha mask and boxing gloves for him so he can look the part.

Nick Valentine is obviously the best, but I liked Hancock, Curie and Danse as well, and while not as interesting as characters, I enjoyed Cait's and Piper's voices/personalities.

I literally cannot remember a single one of those Fallout 3 companions, and I even played that game twice.

I used Boone and Cassidy for most of New Vegas, but don't remember them too well, should play it again.

There are I think three dialogue checks that are unlocked by having him as a companion when you talk to a certain NPC. The wounded ranger in Novac is one of them that I remember pretty clearly; you talk to him about how he was wounded in his glory days and how he's struggling to deal with retirement. This triggers Raul and makes him reveal a piece of his backstory whilst asking you a question about how to deal with getting old. You can be supportive or tell him that he should just retire and after all three choices you either get GUNSLINGER RAUL or CROTCHETY OLD MECHANIC RAUL.

My point was that 3/NV were still at that stage where you could instantly tell it was a Gamebryo game because characters had that special, shitty brand of retard to them, and I absolutely despised that look. Mass Effect and Dragon Age suffered from a similar problem but it wasn't as bad there, and the companions were always differentiated enough from generic NPCs, while in 3/NV they looked just like all the other retarded NPC faces.

The ones in 4 had a lot more care put into them, and it had progressed far enough from the above to not be a problem for me.

Appreciate the replies. Intended to do a savescum-free playthrough... then that Goodsprings settler got killed by geckos in the tutorial mission.

I've never actually completed New Vegas fully (first played on my old laptop on the lowest possible settings before I got into modding - got the furthest way through the game - maybe 3/4 - then but that was years ago now. Then picked it up for the PS3, got to the Repconn mission and my interest fizzled out).

I'd heard on /v/ that The base of Project Nevada worked well/was a great combination with Saywer's ultimate patch... but you don't recommend mixing them? NMC's texture pack was also mentioned as being really great.

I tried for a definitive vanilla-type playthrough run using NVSE, NVAC, YUP, and JSawyer's mod on hardcore (normal). Any essential mods /v/ could recommend that I'm missing?

And yeah, unfortunately companies seem to be more driven by profit than actual quality or care for their IPs. Not that I'm saying companies shouldn't be aiming for maximum profit, but PR is also a virtue when we're talking long term.

I'm pretty much the same myself, I enjoy debating this kind of stuff with people mainly because of how fun it is and we get to toss around our knowledge of the Fallout lore, implying it's civil I mean.

I recommend Mod Organizer. FOMM will do in a pinch, NMM is an inferior program but works. Don't expect stability with NMM.

What weapons are fitting for a female courier? I'm keeping strength at 4 for realism reasons. Obviously, melee is not an option, beyond a little knife or something. That leaves me with guns and energy weapons. I think one handed weapons and SMGs of low calibers would be the way to go.

That's also true, but as much as I'd like to see Harold's journey from West to East, it'd depend on too many factors to be successful.
It would pretty much need to be done by Avelonne or Sawyer themselves lest the ultrahardcore fans nitpick every detail and decry it as non-canon garbage, and I'm pretty sure one left Obsidian while the other is currently making a game.
Doesn't help that Fallout still hasn't quite broken through the massive normie threshold as of yet. It's close, but not close enough for most casual fans to buy a comic about some minor character.
That's not even going into the fact that Sawyer and Avelonne loved to buttheads about their visions of what Eastcoast Fallout should be like, meaning getting them to decide on how it should go over a lore choice that was made by Bethesda would likely be difficult, to say the least.
Still, there's always hoping they get tired of printing out little knickknacks and figurines and try to experiment with the merchandise.
Even if Bethesda were to write it and it had the worse writing than Tactics 2, it still wouldn't be nearly as bad as the comics for Dark Souls.

I just bought fallout NV with all DLC from the steam sale. It will be my first time since I played it in 2010 on the ps3, and I didn't even finish it then so I'm basically going in new. What mods would you recommend for a newbie? Any tips? What order should I play the DLC?
