why does this game have a heal if it's TOO FUCKING SLOW TO USE AGAINST BOSSES THEY DON'T GIVE YOU A PAUSE TO HEAL EVER
>>
become better skilled
>>
>>382517108
THERE IS LITERALLY NO TIME TO HEAL

THE BOSS PATTERNS DO NOT GIVE YOU ENOUGH TIME
>>
>>382517149
Which boss anon?
>>
>>382517184
THE FUCKING STUPID LOST KIN
>>
>>382516948
Guess what

There's a charm for that
>>
>>382516948
Because it enables you to periodically refill your health after challenges rather than the entire game being a survival gauntlet from one bench to the next
>>
>>382516948
Stop wasting time and punch the boss more. Also certain abilities can give you some minor i-frames if timed well, such as your down slam.

Bosses often have some form of hitstun that can give you some time to recuperate.
>>
>>382517247
Quick heal charm is easy mode. I bought it after I kept getting my shit kicked in by the watcher knights. Bought the charm and beat them easily.
>>
Was the random stuttering bug ever fixed? I stopped playing at launch because it really ruined the game for me.
>>
>>382517287
but in a dark souls game, where estus is slow, the bosses will occasionally fucking chill out and let you get a heal in

the bosses in hollow knight never fucking let up. the only time they stop is when you do enough damage to down them

but when they KEEP FUCKING JUMPING AND INFINITELY SPAWNING SHITTY MOBS THAT DO CONTACT DAMAGE YOU CAN'T OUTDAMAGE THEM
>>
>>382517231
If Lost Kin is giving you too much trouble you can save him for to the end of the game where you can come back fully upgraded and just spam attack to kill him in 10 seconds. I accidentally did that and went the entire game without double jump until it was absolutely necessary to progress towards the good ending.

The path to this boss was genuinely spooky

Fuck the deepnest though. Too much bullshit.
>>
>>382516948
>>382517149
>completely misunderstanding the purpose of the mechanic.

it's designed as a mid fight heal.
it's so when you complete challenge A well you can heal up and go into challenge B at full strength. not so you can spam heal mid challenge.
>>
>>382517231
You might want to save him until the end of the game. If you're already there, use Joni's blessing charm with whichever one increases your invincibility duration after being hit. There's another charm that allows you to swing faster too so you can just face fuck him with so much health you won't need to worry about healing.

Most of those optional refights can't be bested by conventional means.
>>
>>382517287
This. There's a reason there's fodder enemy everywhere. Fight an encounter, then heal up on the fodder enemy for the next one.

>>382517462
You have attacks that come out instantly. If you can't react to things fast enough, there are charms to help you
>>
>>382516948
>>382517247
There are a few charms to help with that. One heals faster, one slower but double health, one trades healing for higher static health, and the last gives you healing over time. Different ones are better against different bosses, and being able to adapt and change your charms is part of the design.
>>
>down the boss
>finally get a chance to heal
>retarded infinitely spawning orange ghost bumps into me while I'm healing and completely wastes my fucking time
AAAAAAAAAA
>>
>>382516948

This is not true for 90% of bosses, who all have stuns that allow you to heal. Lost Kin is pretty much unique in that he has adds who come in even while he's stunned (you could still probably get a heal off).

I'd recommend the Defender's Crest charm. It completely trivializes the orange infection blobs.
>>
>>382517702
Use one of the AOE charms they help a ton with ghosts
>>
>>382517702
Just use the Defender's Crest to negate the orange blobs.
If you're having that much trouble just go somewhere else for now.
>>
My comp isn't a toaster, but it's not terribly high-end either. I've played AAA games just fine, relatively new ones, but for some reason HK just chugs along and I get input lag

How do I deal with that? I really want to play this shit, but it's borderline unplayable right now
>>
>>382517702
I stubbornly had to fight the rng to sneak in one heal during his stagger moments.
>>
>the bosses in hollow knight never fucking let up.
>the only time they stop is when you do enough damage to down them

You're stupid and bad at video games.
>>
Maybe you aren't supposed to heal during boss fights?

Isn't the entire point of having a slow heal to keep people from using it mid-combat?
>>
>>382518005
I don't want to leave because this boss is in the deepest asshole of the map with no convenient way of getting there
>>
Those Mantis Lords are giving me trouble. The Soul Sanctum in City of Tears as well.
Should I go explore the waterways and leave them for later?
>>
>>382518137
You can heal during almost every boss fight, you just need to time it right. OP is just bad at video games.
>>
>>382518187
Soul Sanctum holds a necessary upgrade. I'd recommend you keep trying on that
>>
>>382518137

You're clearly meant to heal during the boss stuns, seeing as attacking a stunned boss immediately snaps them out of it, whereas leaving them alone and healing causes the stun to last long enough to get some health back.

The particular boss he's complaining about is really the only boss in the game who has a way to damage you while it's stunned.
>>
I've played this game for nearly an hour and I haven't found any upgrades yet (besides the healing thing). Am I stupid or is it supposed to be like that?
>>
>>382517462
>but in a dark souls game
Dark Souls is a shit game
>>
>>382518367
xd
>>
>>382518187
I would, how far have you gotten in soul sanctum? did you reach his second form? because the second form is easier then the first.
>>
>>382518379
You ok pal?
>>
>>382518187
Mantis Lords are easy, just learn their patterns and get used to fighting them.
>>
>>382518363
Yeah. The game takes too long to give you a fun new movement ability. I almost gave up at the beginning too. Just find the next ability and things will get more interesting fast. At least it did for me
>>
Is the whole game in this dark musky underground? The best part about Castlevania is the diverse environments, if the whole game is dressed in the same textures I may have to overlook this game.
>>
>>382518363

It's pretty gradual with the mobility options. They're all good, but don't expect them all to be dumped on you in the early game.
>>
>>382518363
First level, and second to an extent are really tutorial levels. Game really starts opening up after that and you get much more freedom.
>>

Castlevania had a cohesive artstyle and it was very vibrant.
>>
Don't get hit then
>>382518016
It's Unity fault
>>
>>382519396
Castlevania has a mix of cheese horror, hammer style horror, gross out horror, and plain ole japanese animu shit. By no means does it have a coherent aesthetic beyond everything being vaguely horror themed. That's what happens when one of the core tenets of your series is reuse assets as much as possible but artists keep changing and adding new stuff to the pile.

Beelzebub from SOTN is genuinely disgusting, compare that to say a Flea man or, my favorite, the maids with vacuum cleaners in DoS.
>>
OP is going to have lots of fun in Super Meat Boy area.
>>
>>382519396
The games are very similar in level design, and to an extent art design. The big difference is castlevania takes place in a spooky castle, and hollow knight takes place in a hole in the ground. It's supposed to be dark, and depressing to an extent. green path and queens gardens are both very vibrant, but they still have a darkness to them because that is part of the game's style and design.

Anyone else had a harder time with Failed Champion and Soul Tyrant than with the Radiance?
>>
>>382519396

I think you may be confusing vibrancy with warmth. The color palette is neither, but your line of criticism seems odd. The fact that blues, greens and purples are the dominant colors means it's cool, but it lacks vibrancy because the colors are subdued as opposed to bright.

As for your overall question of why, it's because the subdued palette is intended to convey a melancholy, quiet tone in keeping with the themes of the game as a whole.

Kinda like asking why Starry Night doesn't have more neon orange and bright red in it. It's fine if you don't like the painting, but it's not really criticism.
>>
>>382520123
Soul Tyrant is a homage to death in CV and is just as annoying. I've been saving him just because i don't wanna deal with that shit right now.
>>
>>382517231
>>382516948
Aight, dog. Chill for a second. I agree, he's pretty shit design. But if you equip quick slash and spore charm and fully upgrade your nail then you can easily stagger him. Then when he staggers just immediately charge for heal. You will emit spores and kill all the ghosts around you and slightly damage the boss if he's close. Once he staggers like 6 times he will die.

>>382517407
Nah, fuck that. Quick heal is completely fair, senpai. Especially for that shitty fight. Those fuckers have bad patterns sometimes that fuck you. If that double bounce had a fixed pattern and couldn't change based on distance then it would be fine, but fuck that shitty attack when two are out.

I can't really think of any bosses that you can't heal on, even dream bosses. Some require you to use specific charms though. If you're having trouble with mobs interrupting your heal try the charm that deals damage when you expend soul, a lot of boss adds die in 1 hit from it so you can just heal through them.

>>
>>382525562
Yeah, I agree. At the beginning of the game it seems pretty reasonable. But they expect the player to literally go upgrade the sword twice immediately after the third boss and even then you still probably need a couple of notched charms just to make some fights reasonable.
>>
>>382525583
Doing these early is hell. Without charge slash and upgraded nail it just takes fucking forever.
>>
>>382525875
Yeah, I fell into that hell hole relatively early. I luckily had charge attack but still I wasn't ready. I also didn't know about the whole, exit game to return to last bench. So I thought I was stuck until I finished, so I did finish that place. And it was literal nightmare fuel.
>>
>>382525651
Really? I think the big guards w shields are pretty easy to handle, especially if you have Quick Slash.
>hit his shield
>get two hits while he winds up
>dash away
>dash back in and get one or two more hits
>rinse and repeat
not to mention you always fight those shielded spiders in pretty tight corridors and don't have a lot of room to maneuver.
>>
I'm playing a different route and got the charged dash slash first. It's so useless. Especially when it's next to the quick slash
>>

The great slash is extremely useful in the tournament and in a couple boss fights where you can only get one hit in at a time, like the second hornet fight.

>>382526605
Charged attack useful sometimes because it onehits certain enemies.
>>
>>382526504
>>382526605
The ranges and hitboxes are bigger, the dash slash is useful for enemies with short aggro ranges so you can one shot them before they activate.
You can also just spam it on enemies with shorter range so you never risk getting hit.
>>
>>382526735
I thought that too. But you can leave an enemy alive to get up. Although, when I learned that, I already killed them so I didn't feel like coming back until I had the double jump

>>
>>382526605
Charge slash is great. Especially with the nailmaster charm.

The dash slash is basically charge slash with a different hit box and since it can only be used after a dash it's much less useful.

Spin slash is mostly useless. It does deal decent damage if the enemy doesn't get knocked back, but it still deals less damage than attacking with quick slash.

I used them all extensively, but certainly not useful for anything except appeasing autism. Like dash slashing into shield knights is super satisfying. Also for Watcher Knight.

Why did I not think of that?
>>
>>382527134
I just cheesed it with Hiveblood.
>>
>>382527008
>but it still deals less damage than attacking with quick slash.
I think if you extend the spin slash it does a bit more, but yeah, not really that great.
>>
>>382527319

it rekts Failed Champion and the laser guy in Crystal Peak.
>>
>>382517231
Equip the defenders crest to easily deal with the adds it makes the fight borderline trivial.
>>
>>382527319
I would even like to turn off being able to use spinsplash. I only occasionally accidentally use it and fall into spikes or something.

Is this game actually good or is it merely a meme? Ori was pretty but kinda boring due to being piss-easy and simple. This doesn't look too pretty in my eyes, does it play better?
>>
>>382517702
That's why you kill them the second he goes down, you have enough time to quick charge 2 masks after
>>
>>382527957
The game is actually good, that's how it went from completely unknown with not much money in it's kickstarter to being talked about by everyone after 4-5 months after it came out due to word of mouth.
>>
>>382527957
I didn't like ori, it was too slow and only near the end some stuff got fun because they were too afraid to give you some actual options at the start, making the game drag out really long.
Also ori had some really terrible levels (the gravity temple).
Hollow knight is a lot better in both these aspects, you can go almost anywhere right from the start. Mainly you get access to most movement abilities right from the getgo.
There's also a surprisingly large amount of optional content. Oh and I really love the bosses, they all feel fair, yet challenging.
>>
>>382527957

It's very good, but takes a solid 3 hour investment of not exactly enthralling gameplay before it becomes properly fantastic. The following 30 hours after that are a highlight of the past 5 years for me.

There's a lot in this thread that I hadn't experienced, I had no idea that there are multiple endings
I think I need to play through again
>>
>tfw stuck not even on a boss but a mini boss
Fuck that Soul Warrior fucker.
>>
>>382516948
Don't hit the bosses when they're stunned, dummy. It's your cue to heal.
>>
>>382528631

I feel the same, but will wait for whatever the expansion has to offer.
>>
Anything happen if you buy out a shops supplies? I am close to buying out the last item of the map lady but I don't really need it but am curious if she gets new items if I do or something.
Also will fragile charms need to be rebought if I die wearing one?
>>
>>382528682
He's a proto-Broken Vessel. Just aim for the ghosts and smack him when he's safe to hit.
>>
>>382528867
What ghosts?
>>
>>382528892
Oh you're stuck on that version. Keep your dash on hand and watch for telegraphs, nigga. And go get your nail upgraded because you're really going to suffer if you can't handle the first Soul Warrior.
>>
>>382528815
The map shop in particular gets new pins as you encounter new interactable objects. But, yeah, shops will eventually run out of stock. Nothing special happens though.
The fragile charms will break if you die, yes, but repairing them doesn't cost as much. It's just a hassle to go all the way back to the Fungal Wastes, since fast travel is rather limited in this game.
I find the fragile strength to be a top tier charm though. It's hard to die, when you kill every enemy in a single hit.
>>
>>382527957
The combat and platforming is deceptively simple. It makes up for it with its bestiary. I think the difficulty peaks are really great
>>
>>382523614
My headcannon is the idea that it had a sibling to care about, instilled in that scene.
>>
Who else 100%'d the game? It wasn't as difficult as I was expecting. Things like the dream bosses, white palace and trial of fools were pretty tricky, but not impossible. Trial of fools was the hardest one for me to beat though.

Also completing the hunters journal was bogus. I expected a cool secret boss fight, but got faked out instead. The hunters design is pretty cool as well.
>>
>>382529607
A whole bunch of fights got cut for budget reasons. The most obvious "we ran out of fucking money" is the Hunter fakeout and Tiso just showing up dead.
>>
>>382529720
Do you think they'll add those fights back in when they inevitably make a special version of the game?
>>
>>382529720
Budget reasons? Really? Well that fucking sucks. Tiso would have been a really cool fight. Meeting him in several locations until you finally face him 1 on 1 in the Colosseum. Wasted potential.
>>
>>382529773
Hopefully. I'd rather they get the Hornet DLC stretch goal out the door and then move onto a sequel/new game instead of pulling a Yacht Club and just working on the same game post-launch for several years, but if they've got the time absolutely.

Those fakeouts in particular just bummed me out.
>>
>>382529875
The Hornet DLC is probably gonna take pretty long, since they're gonna release the free content packs first. Maybe next year or so.
>>
>>382530054
Didn't they also have an idea for a 2nd character DLC with Zote on their kickstarter page?
>>
Good places to grind geo early game?
>>
>>382530179
They also said that the White Palace was going to have two bosses.

And thank fuck it didn't, because that hellhole was long enough.

>mfw I thought there was going to be a boss after the stabby gates section
>>
>>382530243
I think they turned one of the bosses into a regular enemy. In the kickstarter page they called it the "Kings Golem". And I think that ended up being the enemy at the start of the white palace.
>>
>>382516948
Because that way you can't abuse your heals. The game forces you to learn enemy attack patterns and behaviour in order to minimize damage taken. You can still heal during battle if you time it right but the slow cast time forces you to use them strategically.
>>
I've no idea where to go next.

There's supposedly a Dreamer in the spider village thing, but I can't find anything there.
>>
>>382530582
Have you unlocked the stagway? It's on the far bottom left.
>>
>>382530582
Also, for shits and giggles: there's a ball of web somewhere in the chamber with the entrance to the dreamer's lair that you can enter. Nail the corpses there for some useful tips :^)

Just started playing this game, do you need the compass thing in order for the map to fill in as you explore?
>>
>>382532791
no, I think the map fills automatically when you rest at benches, compass is just to show the PC location on the map
>>
>>382532791
You need the Quill, the compass just indicates where you are.
