Someone red-pill me on SpeedRunning. How do they do it? How can they be so good at games and memorize everything? Is that why they all eventually go insane?
>>
Speedrunning and its popularity is nothing but glamorizing and glorifying man-child addictions, which most of the time is fueled by autism or other mental disorders/special needs. Its just showing off their memorization and muscle memory skills, for a game they played thousands of times. If you see that as anything besides beyond pathetic, you should get diagnosed
>>
yeah, you just memorize the game. used to be how you beat a game back in the day before save states
>>
>>382513216

This can be said about gaming as is.
>>
I used to play a lot of vidya but I never got good at anything. I could never do a decent speedrun no matter how much I practiced. There must be more to it than sheer autism.

>>And their skills at exploring the game's mechanics at a deeper level to find all those glitches they exploit
The VAST majority of speedrunners have never, and will never, find even a single worthwhile glitch.

All of the skill in running comes from routing, which is usually a collaborative effort at best, and entirely theorycrafting. The people you see, playing a game day in, day out, have no skill. They've taken someone else's route, and will grind it out for 5000 hours until all the planets align and they shave 20 seconds off the record. It's ironic that in speedrunning, the people who have the most fame are actually the least skilled of all, anyone can grind a run for eternity, only spergs are actually capable of doing it without killing themselves though.

TAS is where every true speedrunner eventually winds up. Rather than thinking about the "perfect RNG", they create it artificially, and attempt to find a perfect route through a game with deep analysis. But even that will die eventually, there are already programs that will bruteforce a screen with 80 billion inputs to save half a frame and find completely new tricks because of it.

You already know it's autism, OP. Their inability to interact socially also makes them feel like pariahs, which is partially to explain why there are so many goddamn trannies among them.

Seriously, it's a fucking problem. I like watching the GDQs, but whenever the trannies speak or are shown, it repulses me.

Wow! It must've felt so good to spend so much time to accomplish literally nothing of value.
>>
I did a run which I had to route myself entirely since it hadn't been run before (and hasn't been run since to my knowledge).

I basically just looked and asked around for whatever glitches had already been found, and then did some of my own research looking for common glitches. One game-breaking glitch was already known. I myself found ways to use physics to get a boost, or confuse the game by pushing buttons quickly.

The actual recording is a lot of muscle memory, trial and error, and luck. There was little skill required for my run, but some games like Starcraft probably require a higher bar of basic skill.

How does it feel to invest that much time and get literally nothing out of it? You could have learned how to draw, program, play an instrument, build fucking tables, a million fun things, and you spent it putting hundreds of hours into some crappy single player games that you can now play at a moderate pace.

I honestly think that one moron who dropped out of college to pursue a career as a professional guitar hero tournament player had better judgement than any speedrunner.

It all comes down to repetition. It is a basic pedagogical strategy. The more you do something, the more familiar you become with it and can do it without thought.

Only time I did it was Sonic Adventure 2: Battle for the gamecube, I loved the game and played it a shitton, eventually I was breaking my own records and shit, one day I found out I beat the best record in youtube for about 20 seconds, sadly I was never able to record it and even if I bought the game for Steam I don't think I'd be able to repeat the feat.

There's an insane difference between what you're doing and what everyone else is doing. People play games for many different reasons. For the challenge, for the story, for social interaction, whatever.

I can see some appeal in doing something goofy like trying to beat a game with no A presses, and treating it like a thought experiment with hypotheses you can test. But putting that egg into the drawer all day, using egg grasping strats that have been passed around for years? What's fun about that? You're just autistic.

You're right for, well, most games and most categories.

Some categories will really thrive on speed, though. Any adventure game where the character moves in a fluid and subtle way will be fun to play fast, for the same reason racing games work.

Up to a point, of course. No game is worth all your free time.
>>
>>382515462
its completely different. we play video games for fun as a form of escapism. we enjoy our time.

speedrunners are fueled by autistic pride and some kind of twisted idea that shaving time down on their runs gives them a high. speedrunners do not enjoy what they do, they do it because theyre addicted sad piles of worthless garbage who foolishly believe their status will be improved in joke of a community.

plus theyre not even good at video games as a competitve genre that has carryover like being an fps nerd. they just memorize one game. thats it.
>>
>>382516227
There is a difference but framing speedrunning as a bigger waste of time than playing video games is a laughable argument. What's the difference between spending 1000 hours on jrpgs and spending 1000 hours speedrunning a game you love in terms of practical skill gained? If anything speedrunning is more useful because it demands you to be patient, playing games for the story is purely useless escapism. The fun comes from gradual improvement, the tension during successful runs and the high when you get a new record.
>>
>>382516372

I remember that even before I hear what speedrunning was, my dad my brother and me would sit down and try to complete resident evil games as fast as we could.

I also remember being so proud of being able to beat the RE4 in under 2 hours and being faster than my dad and brother that i looked up RE4 time record online and saw some shit that said it was like 30 minutes or something.

I watched the video and saw that just some autismo glitching the game to skip shit, that's not speedrunning, you're just glitching the fucking game, speedrunning to me is the way we do it, learn enemy patterns and spawn points, kill the shit that needs killing, memorize puzzles to solve as fast as possible, we didn't glitch the game we learned it and beat it with just skill.

So yeah speedrunning is for autist who think glitching to the end = beating the game.

Most carts are at or over 18 years old now and will start failing soon enough. Same goes for VHS tapes and cassettes, physical medium just doesn't last forever.

Sure, also reading and sports

/n/ was one of the first boards. It was /pol/'s audience
>>
>>382517881
Can you just replace the batteries on those or does that involve destroying the cart?
>>

Retarded newfag, it's used to say "give me the TRUTH".

>b-but muh alt-right boogeyman

The term used to be used by pick-up artists, if we are going to just assume some IRL ill intent. In this context, it just means "give me the real truth". This is like accusing people on v of real homophobia, when they call you a faggot
>>
>>382518029
you would have to be very careful when cracking the cart open, but they can be changed out.
>>
>>382517881
Lots of carts don't have battery backup, and even if they do, it can be replaced. Most of the stuff actually in danger is cancerous shit like those suicide arcade boards, but I hear someone found a way around that a while back.

Physical mediums last a long time. It's ironic that you mention tape, that will last longer than any CD or HDD around. The biggest risk right now in terms of preservation is early digital only stuff that nobody cares about.

/n/ was libertarian, not the "LE KEK MAGA PEPE KEK BLACKED XD"-right

>im 18 and am currently doing my bachelors in computer science at university. and yeah, i can program.
If you could program to a sufficient level then you wouldn't be at college unless you are a fucking idiot, you would be working as a programmer.

TAS are better than normal speedruns.

You'll still make less than all those rich Chinese immigrants buying up all your property and driving up prices.

Tape will only survive if it's in an air tight, no light, humidity controlled environment; hence the vault at Disney for films.

Other wise it fails pretty fast.

/new/ was literally shut down for being Nazis. This was before fascism was even slightly acceptable to the public.

How do you get your dead end programming job if you don't spent three years at university sucking up to industry cunts and working for free at hackathons?

hahaha sure, mate.

that's a burden we australians carry at birth; misfortune i wouldnt curse my worst enemies with.

Sports are actually worse. You can't learn interesting technical quirks that improve or educate on the enjoyment of a game like you can in speedrunning. Traditional sports has a ruleset. Causing a technical quirk causes a penalty and interruption of the enjoyment, unless it's not your team and you're a raging bandwagon faggot.

My interest in speedrunning nosedives when it stops teaching me something about the game, but before that point, it's hardly autistic to be interested in them.

I speedran exactly once. Fucking around I made it to like 26th, which made me realize if I tried I could probably get to the top. After going at it for like three days, this was as close as I got, and I enjoyed it for the incredibly short amount of time it took for me to get bumped down a million spots by the 50 or so people who had times of 1:36:xx

I'm happy with that and would probably never do it again.

Speedrunning is the only way to play. Playing a game casually is for fucking casuals.
>>
>>382518547
You make it really obvious you've never played sports.
>>
>>382513615
Speedruns make sense to me if I know the game. In the sense that if someone plays Basketball, they might enjoy watching the NBA.

I can't watch speedruns of random games though. It just isn't interesting. Especially speed runs of like, shit-tier titles. Someone did a speedrun of a Spongebob game. Why should I care?

Is said "fucking hot bitches AND doing important things in life" which implies the opposite. You're dumb.
