Everyone has their barometer for when do went bad depending on their age. Some will say it was the ps1. Some, the PS2. Most here will say the 360.

I feel like games have always been popular to an extent, just over the years it got more popular in different ways. I mean, there was a song called Pacman fever. Mario was a hit with nornies. Mortal Kombat raked in the dough with edgy teens back in the day.

The only difference now is the internet. Like with most things, it shines a huge light on things we never knew existed.

HD destroyed the video game industry. It drove up costs which limited production to very safe stale options. With SD you could put out a game for peanuts so companies could take risks. It was like a much better funded and produced indie scene.

Pong brought casuals into gaming in 1972. Before that, video games were almost exclusively university research projects. Donkey Kong, Pac-Man, Space Invaders. All casual games, all brought more casuals into gaming.

If you understood video game history, you'd understood that casuals are in fact the very life essence of video games. Without games like the ones I just mentioned, video games would still be in universities only. The Wii did what all those games did, as well as what the PS2, PS1, NES, and Atari 2600 did before it.

I can't think of any particular reason why great games slowed to a trickle. I hear they're still made from time to time, but I stopped paying attention. Maybe they have stopped entirely; I hope not.

It's telling, though, that so many people in this thread list sequel X or Y as the last great game. Maybe those sequels had something to make them 'great' rather than merely satisfying the itch that an actual great game had created, I can't be sure. It all just died to me around 2007, yeah.

None of the single explanations offered in the thread so far seem to explain it, but whatever it is it only affected games imo. Movies were still fine and music didn't become good.

that's not my point, my point is that games run like shit, have so many bugs and technical issues up the ass to the point where they become unplayable (i'm looking at you, siege). games used to be much more polished than this, even fucking indie games spend more time polishing their games

I was still buying physical gaming magazines until 2012 or so, the earliest issue I still have is for November 2007 and holy fuck the game review section for the month was insane:

The problem with the video games industry is no one is actually wants to fix it. Its cult status as a hobby is based off of intense consumerism and jacking each other off using tears as lube.

People weep over the lack of community servers for multiplayer games that use matchmaking, but you look at any of our Risk of Rain threads and no one seems to know how to use the basic skill of port forwarding. Preservation is the biggest positive listed, but tell me how many old users are playing Shattered Horizon right now. That continues into the fact that as much as people suck the dicks of old games, they never play them. Oh EA's Battlefront is such shite, but you'll never see a BF2 server on Gameranger ever get more than 10 players. Amazing BF3 Legacy mod was released, but even with dozens of BF2 threads with posts about "M-Muh canceled game," you'll never find anyone to play it.

You'll hear people throw a fit about Denuvo, but what about Steam? It's nothing compared to the dick you're already shoving up your ass because each time a mention of consumer freedom goes by, it's replied with ">GOG" or ">GNU/Linux." Then people will say the issue with Denuvo is restricting mods, but what have we seen in recent years that has truly rivaled anything like the Max Payne matrix mod. You'll barely see anything for Denuvo-free games like The Witcher 3, despite being everyone's apparent GOTYAY, and for as much shit as people waded through to fix previous Bethesda games, fukken nobody used the creation tools they were given for FO4. A few great modders are still out there, but you'll never see as much content as you did in the early-2000s, and even their creators are slowing down (The Specialists -> Double Action Boogaloo still being incredibly rough).

No one's buying DRM-free, playing non-AAA, making mods, or fukken anything. All you people do is wait for the next pile of shit to get shoveled into your mouth. It'll get fixed if you actually fix it
