I miss when you actually had to earn Super Sonic by obtaining all the emeralds instead of just getting to play as him (briefly) at the end of the game to defeat the Big Bad.

In a base fight (no power ups, no emeralds) Sonic would still win just because of his natural abilities. Mario's jumping wouldn't do much so he would have to resort to the punch/kick from 64, but Sonic would be fast enough to avoid the attacks. Sonic's jump attack likely wouldn't do much either, but he would still be able to spindash straight into Mario and take him out. Besides, even assuming Mario lands a hit on Sonic, he's got rings, Mario would only be able to take 2 hits while Sonic could take an infinite amount of damage

I think he means back when Super Sonic was a more sensible power up. In modern Sonic games if you can unlock super mode it's a real mixed bag, like in Colors it literally makes some levels unplayable.
