Merchants in real life also pay taxes. That's just the way the world works man. This game has trade routes and geography, if you want to be a merchant you have to consider the risks and prepare ahead of time. That is the cost of doing business. If there were no risks involved then you could just walk from town to town and transport goods infinitely, meaning everyone would do it and you wouldn't make a profit. You do realize that you can pass the cost of the goods on to the consumer right?
