Gold Edition includes Night of the Raven which is an Add On including mandatory rebalance to make the game even harder. Apparently, once people knew where all the good stuff was they just breezed through the main game.

Basically, the damage formla is fucked, eve though it's straight forward:

(Weapon strength + STR) - Enemy Armor = Raw damage

For bows and cross bows it's DEX instead of STR. This also goes for crossbows, even though they have a strength requirement. Swords with a DEX requirement likewise actually use STR.

Now, this raw damage? If you do not land a crit, or rather, a direct hit, you will only do a tenth of that. And the chance of getting a direct hit is tied to your respective weapon skill.

And in Night of the Raven, everyone but you is on steroids, including weapon requirements. There is a reason why you can find Wolfblade early one just out there. And even then it will not do much.

I hope the people shitting on Gothic know that they are making absolute fools out of themselves, lol.

I know, but it's still shit. First of all, the guy who helps you get to the NOTR content has a bug where he won't bring you to the forest for the last item. I had to get a save file editor and reset his conversation tree. Then, I finally got to the NOTR content and destroyed the enemies there. Then, at the end of the content it got twice as hard randomly for no reason, and I had to leave and continue chapter 2 because I hit a wall. There's absolutely no flow to the game and I just lost interest.

I agree with this. NOTR I'd say would have been better if the rebalancing was optional.

One thing I discovered years after playing G1 last was that you can actually climb up to the plateau over the abandoned mine at the start of the game. Lots of easy monsters up there that net you an early level.

Both games share that they start of amazingly with lots of stuff to while getting more linear towards the end.

How would a Gothic 2 do with modern day graphics?

Probably not too well. The gameplay is basically the same as most other action rpgs - walk around, solve quests, kill stuff. Regardless of the quality of those activities, the main difference to modern games is that in Gothic you can't just walk around and kill everything you come across. In the beginning you will have to pass on a lot of things and then come back later when you are stronger. So in a sense the exploration happens in concentric circles, while in modern games like witcher 3 it's basically just a long hallway you go through once and never look back.

Because of that, for most people gothic would probably be unbearable these days.

Only issue is that if you Z-target, you can only damage what is locked on. Which is a dick in all bigger fights, and so is all the incomplete animations for 2H(you reach neutral long before you can attack again, the same with chaining backdashes, or trying to sidestep)

Aside from the obvious shitposting from OP. I recently went through the Thief series and enjoyed my time with it and I'm glad that it was some anon on /v/ that recommended it.
