I was personally alright with Wind Waker characters not being in the base game since they don't really fit the art style of the game. I think they're better as DLC in that regard, though for a game that's basically all fanservice from the get-go, a lack of initial representation would stand out. I figured that Majora's Mask wasn't represented until DLC because Nintendo was really coy with Majora's Mask hints until the 3DS remake was announced.

Their whole response about variety in the roster is ridiculous. They aren't going to fill the roster with lord characters because they don't want a bunch of swords? Hector and Ephraim don't use them. There are several popular past characters who don't also. And, if it was important not to have a bunch of sword-users, why are the two newcomers sword-users?

I haven't been this disappointed in a game since Fates. I'm really starting to dislike the series. I'm not even going to bother getting FE Switch. IS will find a way to utterly destroy the experience for me, I'm sure.

Yes, I agree 100%. I didn't mind the self-insert Tactician in FE7 because it literally just was me. No dialogue or anything, but sometimes the characters would look out of the screen and talk at me which, as silly as it seems, did help endear those characters to me a lot. In my opinion, this is the ONLY way a self-insert in a FE game should be if there must be one. It should NEVER be a playable character.

If Robin was just a set character, literally nothing about the game or story would have changed other than the ability to actually flesh him out as a proper character without requiring him to keep his dialogue safe and inoffensive as possible to avoid speaking out of turn with what the player would say IRL.

But I can't give him one because past the limited and simplistic character creation there's literally nothing you can customize about him. He can always use both magic and swords, for instance, so there's no class selection to choose from or anything like that. And then there are zero dialogue choices in the game, and what couple choices you are given in the story are literally just false choices that mean nothing and hold no consequences and don't even change what happens in the immediate sense. You can't even do the whole "Pretend how you're responding to other characters because you're a silent protagonist" thing because he has fully-written dialogue.

It's just shit all around and both he and the game would be vastly improved by making Robin a real, set, non-self-insert character. Instead you just get to roleplay as the most bland yes-man strategy autist in the whole world.

Look I like Awakening, Fates and the previous entries. While DW and SW have pretty large casts in their 4th and 8th-9th iterations, this one is the first iteration of the franchise. And with a series with lots of lots of characters like FE the focus was always going to be on the latest entries of the series.

I wouldn't worry since a lot of characters can eventually be DLC or skins since they share an archetype.
