It would be perfectly fine to have a more open-ended "endgame" if any of the systems in GW2 were worth a fuck. Literally all the professions are useless once you hit max level because the highest-tier gear can't be crafted. Waypoints and tiny maps completely remove any sense of exploration so that's out the window, Fractals are dogshit, GvG and Guild systems are barely a thing, etc. You can';t even just roam around experimenting withyour character because there are like 4 total builds for class and most of the differences are just %buffs and minor elemental damage that's barely noticeable.

I don't think you understand. This is one of the times it it BLATANT SJW shit. They shit on or ignored the lore and characters from the original game and focused hard on a team of people folks barely cared about, and then ditched THEM for an SJW crew of LGBT superfriends and doubled down on paid story content following the exploits of an insufferable SO SILLY evil plant steam punk bitch. When the game launched I actually liked the ideas and designs around the new Sylvari race not previously in the lore, but they fucked that up double hard and put the spotlight on them for most of the game. A lot of Sylvari stuff glosses over their more interesting traits and highlights fantasy politically progressive busllshit everywhere. I'm not even particularly political or care about what other people like or who they want to fuck, but jesus I can tell when the writers have a slant and want to hammer home agendas and don't have the skill to make it interesting or nuanced.

It's does good for exploration. Call me casual, but the main reason I bother playing the game is the above average sense of exploration. Other being social contacts and having something to grind while sitening to audiobooks. The PvP doesn't seem too bad, but I don't have the concentration of getting into the meta of any MMORPG so I'd rather go and just play some old school shooter if I want competitive multiplayer.

My major complaint about the game so far is that there really aren't that many class skill slots. I think it would be a lot better if like two of the weapon skills could be used for class skills as well, or you'd have one skillset switch similarly to how the weapons work.

People argue that you shouldn't have more skill slots and skills because it would be harder to balance, but the meta as it is is completely strangled and most classes in PvP only have one viable build. MOBAs have better options for building characters than GW2 does. Attempting to deviate from the meta gets you consistently plowed. The skill ceiling for PvP is also excessively low save for one or two classes. The game gears itself towards spamming your abilities because most classes don't have to manage resources at all. It's been confirmed that a good handful of players in the top 10 of this pvp season rigged their games and bribed people to get there.

Overall, it's a frustrating, unsatisfactory experience which doesn't reward skill and is largely an incomprehensible mess of particles and red circles.

i never had any issues with gw2's combat system, i dislike the game and stopped playing it for other reasons. but the combat system gets a lot of unwarranted flak for having few skills when that's really not the case. the absolute least amount of skills you could have at any given time last i played would have been an engineer not using a single kit skill and you'd have had 15 skills to use. every other class uses around 25-30 skills actively with some outliers approaching 40-50 different skills. most mmos don't really go past having 10-20 actively used low cooldown skills with maybe two or three times that amount in buffs and long cooldown situational skills.

the real issue is that most skills do not have enough of an effect, gw2s combat essentially boils down to many low impact spammable skills

compare it with recent games like hero shooters and mobas, you have very few skills but those you do have all have very noticeable effects, they impact the gameplay instantly and on their own

What completely killed it for me was the 6? abilities being tied to weapons or dead-locked to healing spells. Oh and another one was locked to one of like two elite skills.
But at least you could now learn a profession and have all your inventory filled up by fucking baking ingredients.

I sit on this awkward precipice where I'm craving a GW1-esque game, but I can't actually go back to GW1 because nothing's been updated for years and most of the maps are empty. I wish I could play the game at its peak again, back when there were people to do missions with and when I was so excited to find new skills. When I found Earthquake as an Elementalist, I realised that all element types did huge damage and I could do all sorts of cool stuff with them. Elite skills blew my mind when I first encountered them in the Crystal Desert. I remember coming home after a hard day of school and my mum had the collector's edition of Nightfall waiting for everyone.

In my fantasies, ArenaNet lets GW1 go open source and lets the players continue to update the game, so I can finally have some new adventures or enjoy some new content. In reality, they just want to forget that the game even existed.

Arenanet is still asshurt about the massive inflation GW1 had when it first came out, where even a slightly uncommon skin was valued at 800 platinum (the max you could trade a player in one transaction was 100 platinum because they never thought anyone would ever have that much).

Ever since then they've done everything they can think of to prevent players from getting gold, including creating an algorithm that gradually lowers the number of gold a drops you get if you farm an area too much over a short period of time (that algorithm is still used in GW2).

I liked the Charr character origin quests mostly for the comfy atmosphere and Stephen Blum's character. However, the main plot goes kinda garbage as it progresses until the final chapters in Orr gain better atmosphere again.

If you decide to play it and if want the story to make sense you need to go through the dungeons, and for that you need to party up with other people.

I'm halfway through the Heart of Thorns campaign which has damn nice atmosphere again, but there's bunch of shit that apparently has happened in the overpriced episodes they are selling separately from the expansion. For starters, Stephen Blum's character gained some retarded mysitcal superpowers and there's a bunch of shitty OC-tier characters that I am supposed to have history with.
