The fact that Microsoft are releasing all their games on both Xbox One and PC baffles me. I mean yeah, it caters to both markets but at the same time if people were truly interested in the games they would be buying the console anyway. I think a lot of the problem lies with consoles not having enough interesting exclusive titles or if there are any they don't get any time in the spotlight due the heavy advertising of Triple A titles such as Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty and Battlefield.

Actually this might be surprising to you, but it doesn't cost anything currently to release software for MacOS or Windows. Since they're open you can sell software for them without the platform holder ever getting a dime.

Microsoft and Apple would both much rather have you use the closed platforms where they can extract fees from the developers to put the apps on the platform, and then take a cut of software revenue.

Microsoft is releasing Xbox software for the Windows Store as the carrot to get people to adopt it, before they use the stick of locking Windows to the Store to force it.
