Berseria was utter fucking shit.

It has a shit ton of systems going on but even on intense it's just way too easy.

I never actually had to care about chaining Attack Down into Burn into Stun, I just equipped a knockdown to Eizen and obliterated mob of Enemies.
Bosses were just Check Weakness > Equip corresponding Title > Make a Combo that contains as many weakness exploitation as possible and spam that combo until I win.

The Gear system also has a ton of shit going on but throughout the entire game i just kept equipping new shit to get as many mastered skills as possible and upgrade shit that takes a long time to master.

Eizen, Velvet and Magilou were still super fun to play tho.

There's your problem.

I love this game and all but the combat bugged me for a while and I couldn't figure out why.
I realized that it was because they forced fights to be slower with the SG system. Maybe it was for balance but they could have done something better than a brick wall forcing you to run around for a bit while it recharges.

Maybe I'm just playing it wrong

Berseria suffers from the "If I use by Break Soul I become a fucking god" syndrome. There's very little downside to abusing it since you can get the soul points or whatever the game called those right back by fucking shit up.

Same as Zestiria's "If I use armatization I become a god". That also used a resource that is very plentiful and fucking doubles your stats and gives you aoe possibilities like nothing else.

Basically both games give you an "I win" button, sure you can forego using it but dealing mediocre damage when you could be blasting everything apart feels stupid too.

Basically it's either no challenge at all (most of the time) or getting rammed in the ass (sometimes rarely), there's no middleground which generally feels the most fun in video games. I want to have to at least try and then have some tough bosses on top of that.

The battle system kind of sucks.

All of the attacks you get are shit. Most do not combo well together and have stupid animations that take too long and do very little damage. I think as Velvet the attacks you start with are literally the best in the game. All have great damage, combo together very well and are quick to execute.

The break system is tedious as fuck too. Early game it takes hits to break stuff and get +1 to your combo which you can use to activate god mode.
Later on shit becomes too hard to break and it's a fucking chore to fight anything, bosses in particular are basically immune to breaking.
What really pushes it is when bosses break you with every single attack. You spend an entire boss fight walking around being able to do 1 hit combos.

The entire system is a fucking chore and gets worse as you progress.

I remember how I said a few years ago that the tales games will always deliver quality JRPGs, unlike the Final Fantasy franchise which went to shit at that time already. Oh how wrong I was. Tales of somehow managed to be even worse than the already bad modern FF games. At least the FF games are highly polished shit games. All Tales games since Xillia feel like cheap cashgrabs and are barely better than memegames like Neptunia these days.

Somehow Zestiria's I win button was less I win. Armatization was just stupid because it had higher hp and damage than unarmatized form and AI was retarded so in the end having 1 more character in field amounted to nothing. Berseria makes Velvet just fucking invincible during her break soul and you can chain it ad infinitum in many battles.

Armatizaion can barely be called cheese because in the end it mostly just gave you bigger numbers and some special attacks on stunned enemies.

Remember when Tales Games had better progression systems? Even Xillia was way better than this shit.

I prefer Graces title system, because it rewarded just playing the game, playing good (doing long combos etc.) and even doing sidequests or minigames to get new titles. And then titles not only gave you passive shit you don't care about like in Berseria

The combat was fine to me, its a JRPG so imo not so important. My biggest complaint about the game is that all the sidequests coming right before you head to the final boss' dungeon. The sidequests should've popped up when you came to the snow place before fighting Melchior and Shigure.

Is Velvet better with or without a dick?

Break Soul is great, but Velvet is just too strong. She invalidates pretty much everything with sheer force with her break soul just leading to net gain central with amazing crowd control, damage and skills for every weakness. They definitely made her crazy on purpose since it fits the story and her character but for the gameplay perspective this might not have been the best idea.

So what's wrong with Zestiria? It's one of the few that caught my eye and I wanted to start with it.

It's an undercooked game, and lacks a ton of polish that you'd normally expect from the series. People like to say that baba left because of the Alisha bait and switch, but I honestly think its because of how embarrassing the development and planning behind the game was. They had plenty of dev time but accomplished so little. Compare to Xenoblade, which was made from scratch and had huge beautiful scenes with on-the-spot combat on the wii. Bamco failed to even come close to this on fucking ps3.
