The Street Fighter V honeymoon is over, and so too goes the American FGC with it. The only reason SFV is still relevant is because Capcom keeps pumping money into the pro scene.

I can't explain the Smash numbers, though, since Smash lives in an entirely different world compared to the rest of the FGC. My guess is that they have other events they consider more prominent and important to them than EVO.

It doesn't change that Sm4sh and Melee are still the #2 and #3 tournaments behind SFV. What's notable is that the gap between the top 3 tournaments and all the other games has narrowed significantly; Tekken 7 is only ~150 entrants behind Melee. EVO may be shrinking this year, but per-game attendance won't be so lopsided as it was last year.

The crowd at Mandalay Bay was at least 50% EVO entrants last year and didn't start to fill up until Melee top 8

Shit's going to be a lot more empty this year and that's a bad look for potential sponsors.

As for Smash #s being down, Melee being on Saturday hurt it because with that many people entering a 2 day tournament, there will be issues and people were discouraged from entering.

Smash 4 being down is a terrible for them and makes Mr. Wiz look bad because he chose them for sunday finals over Melee despite Smash 4 almost always getting less views on twitch than Melee and the general audience finding Melee more fun to watch.

Melee will be just fine, Smash 4 should be ok, but things seem to be trending a bit downward for them

It's a bad look for Smash 4 when during 2GG civil war, the biggest Smash 4 only tournament to date, Mango showing up to watch the crew battle got the most reaction from the viewers.

Aside from Zero and Nairo, Smash 4 doesn't have anyone close that can draw viewers like Melee's top 6. And now with PPMD close to returning, those numbers will jump up again.

Hell, just wait to see how many people will watch Bad Moon Rising, a random smaller North Carolina tourney, just because Hbox is there and PP entered doubles

This is a bad look for the FGC. Attendance way down in almost every game, EVO Japan failing to take off, the disaster that was Dreamhack exposed the Smash scene. Injustice 2 couldn't even out perform MK. MvCi is already dead in the water.

Capcom fucked up royally with SFV, and are continuing to do so with MvCi. Smash 4 is almost as boring to watch as SFV. GG and melee, two of the more exciting games are on saturday finals. The DBFZ tournament is going to probably get more entrants than most of those games lmao.

Smash 4 stopped being new when novelty is one of its main selling points over Melee.
Melee has progressed to the point where its skill ceiling (its primary draw over Smash 4) has gotten so high only a small handful of turbo autismos has any reason to bother competing.
Ironically enough both games are destroying themselves, and since both of them inherently bring attention to the other it just gets worse.
