Witcher 3 had no good being as great and complete as it turned out.
Now I know there's a vocal minority of contrarians who will scream "Muh combat" and use gross hyperbole to distract from this masterpiece but god damn, there's no denying its greatness.
It's just fantastic. The writing, side quests, world and content is unmatched in modern vidya. It simply isn't. The combat, while lacking, is still well more serviceable than /v/ will have you believe.
The Expansion packs themselves were fantastic. The sheer level of content that all feels of a high quality is just amazing. Everything from Velen to Novigrad, to Skellige to the DLC Touissant.
All with their genius little stories and extremely engaging characters.
People will shit on Witcher 3 because it lacks in certain areas and in the same breath praise Gothic 2 that is borderline unplayable to most (with its pathetic voice acting, wonky controls and general lack of polish), Morrowind with its dice roll trash combat and pathetic quests (Fucking fetch quests ) or even Planescape torment that has combat that makes Witcher 3 look like Bloodborne in comparison.
Witcher 3 is genuinely GOTG material, while I personally prefer Bloodborne, there's no denying this games greatness and broader appeal

Gothic's combat is extremely steady and tight. You push up or left or right or swing a certain way your guy does exactly what he always does and if his weapon touches the bad guy they get hurt, if theirs touches you you get hurt. In The Witcher 3 you push your one swing button and Gerald of Riverrun does one of 15 elaborate power-ranger moves while floating towards the nearest guy like they're connected by magnets. Those stupid animations might look fluid but gameplay wise they're the opposite, the tiny and unpredictable bits of time you lose to Gerald flipping around and winding up his swings are extremely annoying and make the combat feel loose and shitty. Gothic guy moves like he has lead inside his clothes but at least his every move feels deliberate.

The combat was just fine the only reason people complain is because the game is so fucking long you start to wish for some weapon variety. If you're playing on death march you really have to prepare for boss fights and learn to utilize combinations of potions, skills, and tactics to survive.The caretaker fight in HoS had me fucking whining at my screen until I remembered that you can add a damage effect to Aard. So I combined that with alternative Aard AOE blast which would knock out the spectres he summons to leech health off of. If you time it just right you can also interrupt his quick AOE attacks and get hits in.I'm sure that wasn't the only strategy for that fight; the same is true for the later fight at the end of the memories arc. The only real problems with the combat are the nearly unlimited dodges and lack of weapon and melee attack style variety. Still a fantastic game that deserves to be held on the same tier as Morrowind which was also amazing and raised the quality bar.

Enemy movements is also much more readable in tw2, parying\riposte mechanic is superior. Only downside of tw2 combat is quen and rolling mechanic but if you won't abuse them the combat is great.
Tw2 has also much superior story and characters. The replay walue in tw2 was also much grater than tw3 which is pretty much done when you finish it.

No really, the previous games are smaller but richer in experience. Imagine my disappointment when i finished white orchard and went to velen went to first vilige i seen and there is literally no npc to talk to. That said i was enjoying vellen but mid through novigrad and later skellige the game turned into a chore. The only memorable moment after novigrad is hearts of stone dlc which was best part of tw3 but other than that the game left bitter taste in my mouth. I remember having way more fun with tw1 and tw2. Ofcourse tw1 had also shitty moments like entire chapter 2 but it also had really great ones like chapter 4, and there really isn't anything like chapter 4 in witcher 3 maybe with exceptions of some glimpses. Tw3 was too big for it's own good.

Enemies can block you without even having a blocking animations, backstabs can hit you without even being hit in the back. The combat in Witcher 2 is borderline unplayable.

Enemy movements is also much more readable in tw2, parying\riposte mechanic is superior. Only downside of tw2 combat is quen and rolling mechanic but if you won't abuse them the combat is great.

at least ubisoft makes you climb something before filling your map with little icons.
botw got it right by treating towers as actual vantage points, allowing players to put markers on the map themselves based on what catches their attention while surveying the land below.
