I dont think that has anything to do with it, but it's not really a remaster (like Grim Fandango) so while the levels are pretty much exact copies, there are differences in camera angles and spacing and stuff. I think it'd be because if you switch back to the old style game it wouldn't line up 100% with the new stuff and it'd be like two separate games (i.e. go to retro crash for x part because it's easier in the old game) or what have you. and the controls are tweaked also.

But yeah it'd have been nice.

I'll give you a tip
Go slow, wait for the patterns in the sliding out walls and learn when to go. If you die complete the rest of the level while still trying to get all the boxes so you learn how to get them
for the Brio level. spin at the peak of the jump to get rid of the crates and be quick about it

What parts are you having trouble with though? Also if it helps get Aku Aku to gold from an earlier level. It only took me 4 tries to get the green gem. Just take it slow lad. no rush

I'm all good for 3/4 of level until I get to the fucking part with the teetering platforms and the lizard between the two moving pillars right before the final ! crate. At which point my reflexes are shot because I either jump too early or too late, missing the next platform by a fucking hair!

But the remakes do nothing to improve on Crash 2 and 3 which still hold up, even today. It still plays great, and graphically has aged phenomenally considering it's from the PS1.

The Unreal graphics are absolutely awful and jarring as fuck in some of the new levels. It's definitely just a slapdash cosmetic overhaul with "modern" tech, I feel someone who understood the appeal of the Crash games would have done it far better.

Too many fucking remakes try to remove some of the "outdated" features that define what makes a game special, instead of doing the correct thing of preserving those aspects, and then improving everything else - to enhance the stuff that was good.

I think of Crash I think of responsive, snappy animations and a chunky textured world, not bloom, particle effects and Pixar animations.

The remake isn't bad but it's much like Wind Waker HD - it never needed to be made.

take a break from the level as well and when you get up to the hard parts you find, go slow if you can. Make the jump. take a breather. jump again etc. remember not every part is a rush

Crash 2 gets Time Trials from 3, the Crash Dash once you beat Cortex in 2, the box counter from 3 along with the two wumpa fruit per bounce box, and they both get playable Coco. It' not the biggest things ever, but it's nice and something.

doing the spin jump is easy, at the same time you jump, press sqaure. so basically x and sqaure at the same time and you should be able to walk on the jump crates.
Always try and clear the top layers first, ignore getting all the fruit. if you clear the top you should be able to manage the bottom easier as you can count then

So to the reviewers who docked points for the game's difficulty, are they being unfair? I don't see how they did not mention the ridiculous loading screens but instead focused on reviewing a fundamental piece of the gameplay which we have known of for twenty years now.

It's also insulting to assume that nobody can enter into this series today and have fun with simple running and jumping. Everything has to have six million mechanics with ten hours of cinematics and very easy gameplay, I guess.

Reminder that if you're having a ton of trouble with the game and you think you shouldn't be, turn on your TV's "low latency" mode. This is usually under a setting called "Game Mode". This is not a picture preset, but an actual setting that reduces latency issues so your inputs are more precise.

Graphics are really great. 1080p30 on base PS4. There is a really nice motion blur added as well that looks really good. Controls for 2 and 3 are spot on while 3 has been updated to not feel so clunky. There are some Quality of Life changes, mostly to Crash 1, where the death penalty for getting Box Gems is removed. Auto Save is a thing. You still can't die for getting color gems.

The games you mentioned had the features you described because those games were still built on top of the old engine. Being on PC means you can just emulate the original game with updated textures and smoothed models.

Crash's engine is so old that it literally cannot be emulated on modern hardware. That, and the lack of native backwards compatibility make this kind of game impossible. Stuff like Halo CE remastered was possible because you were literally playing the original game with stuff plopped on top.

The requirements for getting the colored gems is completing the level with all crates and no deaths, but wasn't that essentially the requirements for ALL gems in the original game?

IIRC, the checkpoint boxes didn't save any of the crates you broke up to that point, meaning that if you died, all the crates would respawn and your crate count would go back to 0. Is that not how the original game worked?

As for wonderboy, I'm 99% sure they did it the same way Crash did it, then they just did a swap of the new hand drawn sprites for the old classic sprites. Maybe something like that would have worked for crash, do the remakes but add a button that shifts everything into alternate models which are just the old versions. It'd probably be a lot more work though and I doubt a whole lot of people would see that as deciding factor for the game, so I get why it wasn't included.

No it isn't. But software developed for old hardware will take advantage of the old hardware. Pixel perfect jumping isn't a thing anymore because one pixel is almost invisible at 4k. It was a much more doable task in in the days of 256x224 because the pixels were stretched over a 30+ inch screen, so precision platforming was used as a way to increase difficulty and replayability. It's not needed anymore.

The point where both start being fun is when you understand them and can see yourself improving with every practice. AG-racing/arcade racers especially because no AG franchises play alike so you need to learn the ins and outs of each specific game to be good at them. You get the coloured gems in later levels, you'll know them because the shape of the gem slot is different and when you go in the level it'll tell you to finish the level without dying to get the gem.

Oh yeah, if you're doing resets, the Trilogy brought the original method of pressing "start" to pause then "select" to go back to the map by pressing "Options" then the touchpad so you don't have to highlight "Quit" on the menu. Just beat Ripper Roo and I don't know if it gets super rough or not beyond that...but looking at the reviews for this game it is a genuine shame that people seem to be missing the point, unless i'm missing the point. The game does ramp up in difficulty later on, especially in the later stages. I'm dreading having to get the blue gem. That one always gave me troube as a kid. I was wary about still being able to get a clear gem even if you die, but looking back I like how they approached this. The colored gem stages are arguably the hardest stages to get through without dying, so it doesn't really do much to change the difficulty. Especially since you have to get every single box in all of the bonus rounds.
